He is 3 won't be 4 until July. We've tried taking them away before and he screamed. He was very easy to break from bottle and pacifier when younger. Don't know what to do.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using a sippy cup as long as he knows how to drink from a regular cup.

He is too old to take the sippy cup with him out in public and he is too old to just be carrying it around the house so he can drink whenever he wants. That is using it as a bottle.

If a sippy cup is used because they want a drink between meals and you don't want it to spill then okay. Using a sippy cup at the table is pushing it. At 3 he should be using a big boy cup.

He also is to big to take a sippy cup to bed. It is bad for his teeth and again just using it as a soother.

I would set some rules - no sippy cups during meals and no sippy cups leave the house. If he throws a fit and fights it then you'll have to do it cold turkey.

If he screams and you give in then he will scream forever. He knows you'll cave.

Be ready for a fight. You can do it! SD

What's your hurry? There's nothing wrong with a 4 year old drinking from a sippy cup. By the time he starts kindergarden you'll want to have him drinking from a regular cup... but nothing wrong with it at this point.

Just try giving him a regular cup when it's convenient, when it can be handled in a low-key way.. don't make a production of it or you'll just cause him to be more stubborn about it. If he has water in his sippy cup, offer him a sip of your juice, from your cup. No biggie.. just... "MMMmm this juice is good... want a sip??" Give him the sip and don't mention that it was taken using a regular cup... It won't be long before he's asking for a big cup.

My son will turn four on July 11. It's been at least a year and a half since he's had a sippy cup. So my personal opinion would be that he's too old. Try limiting his use to only the table and only with water in it. Anything else he wants to drink should come out of a regular cup.

I think they are too old for a sippy cup when they aren't proned to spilling. That could be a few yrs out still. My 2 1/2 yr old wants to have "older privilages" and sometimes objects to me screwing on the lid to his sippy cup. 98 % sure he'd end up spilling it without lid. Sippy cups aren't as much as a security thing like a pacifier or bottle. Its a mechanism to keep your sanity intact. Spill proof cups, with straws and such are what I call sippy cups. If the sippy cup is being used for security, then that changes things. I am thinking about spills.

If he has problems drinking from a regular cup, I might let him keep it a little longer. My daughter is 2 and always drinks out of a sippy while at home and when we are out running errands. She was very easy to break of the bottle and binki too. I would let him keep it until 4 and then try taking it away again. He should be broke before starting school though for sure. Good luck

My son is 2 1/2 and he throws sippy cups at me and says he wants another one - meaning he wants the cup his big brothers use. I think if he still wanted a sippy cup at age 3 I would let him because they are not as messy. I guess if you want to stop him from using it, you will have to go cold turkey. It was the only way to get my son off the bottle. Try cups with straws. He really loves those.

My daughter will be four in June and still uses a sippy cup because she likes to walk around the house with a drink and I don't want my younger child spilling it. If you are worried about what other people think you could always try buying a those sport water bottles.

I had to tell my son to throw his away and tell him its gone and he gets to be a big boy. It worked for a while then he forgot about him throwing the sippy cup away. I had to remind him about once a week for a month then he got used to the cup. If this dont work for you then in front of him trow it away and tell him why you are doing this and make sure that he understands that he is now a bigger boy. If your son is still wanting it after a bit then you can let him know that will get him a big boys cup cause its all you have. After a bit of time he will forget about the sippy cup and let his daycare know what you did as well so they can follow through with what is going on at home. Oh and your family as well cause they need to know when your son is with them yo uhave taken away the sippy cup for good. it will be hard for a few weeks but after a bit he will give in. they dont call it terouble 2's-4's for nothing you know.

I don't think it is a big deal. Just make sure he can use a cup. Slowly take it away. Leave it at home when you go out to eat, or to a friends, go to grandparents, or when he is at school. I don't think sippy cups are a bad thing I used them with my older two kids in the car and places I really did not want a spill until they were like 5, they used cups too!

Is he doing anything other than drinking /sipping from the cup?Try to find out if he is sucking or chewing,or forming an oral habit with the cup,if that is the case, then it should be discouraged, your dentist should be able to advice you. Try choosing and buying a new cup with him to replace the sippy cup, if he is not interested, ask him why he like the sippy cup so much.If all fails,it is not so bad to keep using it until he realised that all other kids of his age do not use sippy cup any more.
