If you give me a better description I can probably identify it...is it all grey, what about size of the bird, bill shape, habitat you saw it in etc. It is not a Mockingbird...is it? You can go to http://enature.com and put your zip code in and it will let you know which birds are found in your area. My other guess might be that it is some sort of Flycather or Vireo...many or them are greyish.

Go to Borders books, and go to their bargain section and buy for 4 or 5 dollars a field guide to north American birds by National Geographic. You can usually find a 3rd or 4th edition for a couple of bucks
A big grey bird with a big chest could be several different birds, or even young bird of a more colorful species. You could be looking at a Kite, or maybe an Osprey, or a hawk, or an owl or a pigeon. The book will help you out.
Good luck.

If you could describe the bird more it would help. Does it have a hooked bill like a raptor, or does it have a straight bill? What other colors are on the bird?

As a wild guess, if it has a reddish tail, it could be a red tailed hawk.

You might want to look at this bird link on bird identification, it should help. From what you describe, it might be in the cardinal family.

My guess, if it is shaped like a bluebird but is gray, is that it's a townsend's solitaire - http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i7540id.html Solitaires and bluebirds are members of the same family (old world flycatchers).
