In other words, is your witness at times, on its own, sinning?

There's a play written by Hyam Maccoby titled _The Disputation_. It tells the story of a famous debate in the year 1263 between a rabbi and a former Jew turned Christian. In the play, Rabbi Moses ben Nachman and King James of Aragon are discussing sin and forgiveness. Here's an exchange I think might be of interest to you.

King James: But if a man sins and sins and does not repent because he loves his sin, can he still find forgiveness?

Rabbi Moses: No.

King James: Ah, you see, that is where Jesus is better than your hard God.

Rabbi Moses: And what about those we harm by our continued sin? What does Jesus' forgiveness do for them?

Secularists like myself share the Jewish focus on personal responsibility. In Judaism, one who has offended another person must apologize to the wronged individual and try to rectify the wrong done before asking his forgiveness. And it must be asked of the offended. One does not ask God to forgive wrongs done to others, only those done against God. Christians usually take the easy way out, bypassing the obligation to make amends, by asking God to wipe away the offense.

The way I understand it is that Jesus PAID the penalty for our sin, so whatever sin, past, present, or future we commit is bought and paid for.

He does not however free us from the consequences of sin so yes, when our witness for Christ is a sin, we will bear the consequences in having to face God with our repentant heart, then worry about the damage we have done to the Kingdom.

When we say that Jesus can free you from your sins if you ask him to be your personal savior. It does not mean that we will not sin any more it means that on Judgment Day when everyone is getting charged for their sins, when our turn comes Jesus will have blotted out our sins and will remember them no more. He paid the price for us. People that choose to not have Christ as a personal savior choose to reject to have their sins forgiven and they choose to go to hell. Being a Christian does not mean that we are perfect it means that we are forgiven. So in answer to your question, no we are not sinning when we witness, and we are not bearing false witness when we say that Jesus will forgive you of your sins if you ask him for forgiveness and for him to be your savior. The Bible says that he took all the sin of the world onto himself and anyone that will recognize him as the Son of God that takes away the sin of the world and repents, they will be with him in heaven.

The Holy Spirit frees a believer from "the power" of sin and Jesus freed us from the eternal penalty of sin. God didn't make us perfect or take away our right to choose. A believer is no longer a "slave" to sin but people still have to go through the process of sanctification to overcome besetting sins in their lives and anyone can have a momentary slip into sin.

Yes, as Christians, we still sin. But, we are forgiven sinners. Forgiven by His blood because of His death. Our sinful human nature is still here.

This is why God has told us to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Because when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we allow our sinful nature to be put to death and allow God's Spirit to take over our thoughts and actions to please God and stop our sins. This is an ongoing submittance.

No, we can not be a witness for God by our sins. Only by our love for Jesus and other people is our witnessing effective.

Hopefully we bear witness accurately that Jesus paid the penalty for our sin on His cross, and that by putting our faith in Him, we begin a relationship with God that includes a new life. I teach it this way in my classes:

When we first put our faith in Christ we are free from the PENALTY of sin.
As we continue to mature in our new life in Christ we cooperate with God in the process of our becoming free from the POWER of sin.
When we die and go to Heaven we will be free from the PRESENCE of sin.

The first epistle of the Apostle John clearly states that anyone who says he's without sin is a liar. Christians ought not to be claiming they have completely stopped sinning. However, the transformation that takes place ought to be revolutionary in their own life, and others certainly should notice significant differences. Thanks for asking.

So long as we live in this world, in this body, sin will never stop. That is why God's love constantly covers us.

bearing false witness is to lie and deceive intentionally fooling someone into believing something as truth.
