Basically, I am a female living alone in a big city. I love animals and would never do anything to harm them, So please don't think I want to fight my pitbull. I condemn people who do that, they are sick and should not be allowed to become pet owners. As it is, these loving dogs already have a bad rep, but anyway I just want her to be buff and stocky and look mean, she is a sweetheart already!!! Any suggestions, on what I can feed her? And do you all think its a good idea to crop her ears? Thanks

Oh yeah and I heard about steroids, are they safe? Because I heard that alot of people who want to fight them, shoot them up with steroids, I don't want to harm her, and I also heard of giving her liver and rice? But not sure how to prepare it. Once again thank you all for your feedback!! Greatly appreciated!!!

I don't think Pit Bulls need any help in " looking mean"...They just naturally have a rather intimidating appearance!

Do not crop her ears! I, and probably the majority of people who will answer this, think that ear cropping is mutilation and a horrible cruelty that should be banned. I love the natural ears on such breeds as Boxers, Great Danes, Dobermans, etc.
Second, I understand that you want a dog for protection. Let's face it, 'pit bull' breeds already have a bad reputation, I don't think you need to do anything to make your bully look any worse than her reputation. At most, get her a spiked leather collar or something like that! 'Pit bulls' naturally have a very stocky, muscular frame, that's the way they were designed.
Just feed your pup a premium food like Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro, etc. in the proper amount. Keep her at a healthy weight and get plenty of exercise with daily walks and romps in the park, and your girl will look just the way she is supposed to.
Attend an obedience training class--puppy classes are great if she is still a pup. Regardless, any dog, especially a breed with a bad rep, should be well socialized and trained. You want her to know basic commands and obey you, and you want her to, in general, be friendly or at least nonaggressive toward other people and animals. You can certainly train her to bark on command, and I think that is all that you will ever need for safety.

Absolutely do not use illegal controlled substances on your poor dog! There is no need whatsoever to do this, and if people who fight their dogs use steroids that should be a big warning flag to you, to not do it! Steroids can cause all sorts of long lasting or even permanent damage.
Liver is okay ocassionally as a treat, but too much liver is actually bad! Liver (whether fed raw or cooked) contains high amounts of vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin (this means the body does not excrete it, but stores it). Too much vitamin A can cause bone deformities, liver dysfunction, and in severe cases, death.

added: Whatever brand of food you choose, just give her puppy formula now and then gradually switch to adult formula at around a year of age or at your vet's recommendation.

Let us know what you decide to do!

Well if your gonna crop her ears she should be 9-11 weeks of age. If she's older than that then cropping is not an option because the cartilege has already set in her ear so it wont stand properly.

As for her being buff and stocky, just feed her a high quality food. (Not Iams or pedigree or any of that garbage), and exercise her. If she is older than 18 month you can do things like weight training, if she is younger than 18 months a nice walk will do.

You could also buy one of those studed collars or harnesses for her. Those can look pretty intimidating

Please do NOT give her steroids. Its not a good idea. I have heard there is a vitamin supplement that helps dogs gain weight though.

Cropping Article from realpitbull.com

Cropping is a personal choice, but please consider the following points:

* The AKC standard for AmStaffs actually states UNcropped is preferred. The UKC APBT standard does not promote cropped over natural.

* Cropping is a completely COSMETIC AND UNNECESSARY surgery. During surgery, the dog is placed under general anesthesia which ALWAYS brings with it the risk of complications and even death.

* Cropping IS painful for the dogs, despite what some people try to convince themselves and others; there are tons of sensitive nerve endings in the ears.

* Ears are one of a dog's main means of communication.

* If you do choose to crop, it should be done before the puppy is 12 weeks of age. Cropping after this age is more painful for the dog, as the cartilage in the ear has begun to set and harden as the pup gets older.

* Make sure you choose a vet who crops on a regular basis and is familiar with the correct cut and length for a Pit Bull. It helps to bring a photo of exactly the type of crop job you would like done. My advice is to look at photos of AKC Am Staff show dogs, as these dogs are usually cropped the correct length and shape.

* Be prepared for a LOT OF AFTER CARE! Taping, splinting, cleaning, etc. The pup will come back with STICHES all up and down the outside of his ears. If the ears are not properly cared for, they will wrinkle, fall, fold, bend, and generally not stand correctly. The risk of a crop job turning out poorly is enough to keep many people from cropping their dogs; a bad crop job can truly ruin a dog's expression and general appearance.

* Don't be fooled: cropping IS a major deal. It's not like trimming nails or clipping fur. It is MAJOR SURGERY. Owners should carefully consider ALL THE FACTS before they choose to put their dogs through this painful and unnecessary surgery

****

I don't think it's a good idea to crop a dog's ears if the dog is older than 12 weeks.

there are enough issues involving th bully breeds to include APBT, Boxers, and rotties...House insurance is mor due to the negative stereotypes of said breeds by making her LOOK mean it only adds to the attempts of bsl...

If you want her stocky try a high protein diet and exercise, a little vegetable oil mixed in her food will Help pack on the weight. Then just take her for daily walks to work the muscles out... you can also do a High protein Dog food, and rice bran/cream of wheat/oatmeal mixed in as well... Cropping the ears is only cosmetic and serves no real purpose, if ears are cropped too short it can cause problems later down the road..ears also act as coolants for a dog, dont take that away... Most will SEE shes an APBT and turn tell, due to the hype propaganda they dont have the BEST word out there

I have a 1 year old female pit bull. I feed her Nutro Natural Choice, and she is just naturally very muscular. She has a wide head, very broad shoulders and very muscular legs. And I think just the fact that your dog Is Pit Bull will help protect you. But adding a big chunky leather collar, and possibly cropping her ears would help. But you should really look into it, because cropping a dog's ear is Not easy on them. But just the fact that my dog is a pit bull sometimes scares people, even though she is the BIGGEST sweetheart! Good Luck finding your perfect pit bull, they are very very good dogs!!

You really do not want to use steroids on your dog. They are very unhealthy, and will do harm to your dog. It is best to just feed her a well balanced diet and get her lots of excercise. There are plenty of websites that can help you build up her muscles. Like weight pulling and things. But you really should not use steroids on your dog!!

Pitbulls in general have a very intimidating appearance. Most people will steer clear of them on the street, no matter what the dog's disposition is. My advice would be, in order to make her look mean, give her good nutrition and plenty of exercise. This will help develop those muscles that pitbulls naturally have. Also, a thick collar or one that has spikes will add to the dominating appearance. A dog with a small collar gives off the impression that it does not take much to control the dog.

I like the answer, "give your dog a spiked collar" the best. Pittbulls have been bread for meanness in the first place so I would definitely not recommend giving your dog steroids. I'm on steroids (catabolic), because I have a medical condition where I need to take them in order to help heal my condition, and they make me moody as a human- don't do it with a pitbull- they do not have intelligence like us to recognize when they are getting angry, and may not be able to control their temper, like myself, and attack anything in site- including young children!! I'll admit one thing though, I would like to see how much I can press on the bench press at the gym with Anobolic (unlike catabolic which breaks down fat and tissue for healing, anabolic builds up muscle) steroids for fun now, since I have had to use steroids anyway! I am always cautious when it comes to certain breeds of dogs like Pitbulls and Rottweilers- like raising a wolf caught from the wild, they may seem tame, even if they are raise by a good owner, but sometimes, the wild genetics that are inside the dog may suddenly overrule the dog with no explanation because the wild genes kick in for no reason.

Most people are intimidated by their looks alone. If she is a young dog, most of the time they do appear a little immature but that should change with age and hopefully for what you are wanting she will appear more mature. Some basic obedience would help. People also seem to be more intimidated by an obedient dog, maybe it something that runs through their head.....hmm, wonder if this could be a trained protection dog???... Hope this helps.

Having her ears cut would definitely make her look "mean". If u do this, choosing wot is called a "battle cut" would do the job. This is a style of ear cropping that leaves very little outer ear left. If u choose to have this done, try to find a vet who has experience cropping pit bulls. The other thing is to have her pull weights to give her more muscle mass. Only do not have her start to pull weights until she is fully grown.

Cropping the ears is more painful on a dog as they get older, same with tail. That's why they do it when they are little. Pits look mean as hell and have aggression bred into them. If your dog really loves her master, you'll likely see that side when someone tries to attack you. I had a shepherd mix that rarely barked and was the biggest softie ever. One day a strange neighbor came over with his dog and started raising his voice at me. My dog wasn't so friendly anymore and even defended our cat. Long story, sorry
Take care
