Over the years I've broken world records, been in several feature films and television shows, sang on some of the most prestigious stages in the world, and am currently in attendance at law school. Yet, even with all of those accomplishments, I am totally worthless. I work very hard to help others, to give to those who are less fortunate, to tutor teens who are struggling, etc. But still, I am worthless. So, what is that makes someone have any value at all??? We are taught as children that virtue is value. I haven't found that to be true at all. Despite my efforts to help others and to succeed, no one knows my name, my family doesn't even remember my birthday, and I only have social acquaintances, not friends. So then, how do I accomplish having any value at all? Obviously, I don't have any, nor have i ever. I am truly worthless. How do I gain value, of any kind, to anyone?

No, I am not married. I am lesbian, and I HATE kids. I have no desire to have children, nor will I ever.

I have heard that a lot of people feel alienated these day. But you seem to be an extreme case. How about this, join the Peace Corp. Or, just go on your own to Africa or Central America and help people.

No one is ever truly worthless and if what you say is true, the many things you've achieved in your life , you certainly are not worthless. You are to be commended .

You probably have ' friends' you just haven't allowed yourself to be open with them because you don't trust them let alone yourself.

Self-esteem comes from our parents and families first . They are our first teachers, the first persons who value us and acknowledge us, who teach us how to interact in the world. But as we both know there are people ,who for whatever reason, probably because they were never valued and acknowledged themselves, cannot do that to others, especially their children. It's horribly sad.

I don't know if you've considered therapy , if you have and he or she hasn't helped then you haven't found the right therapist.

I will suggest a book on self-esteem that I have found to be useful, the Six Pillars of Self-Esteem by Nathaniel Branden. It delves into the six areas where you can develop self-esteem and to me anyway has a reasonable definition of what self -esteem is.

You also might read Robert W. Fuller's book Somebodies and Nobodies.

Good luck and whether you want to believe it or not you sound like a very worthy person, even if you don't know it.

Yes, sometimes I feel that way. Are you married and have kids? I feel that I would never be happy even if I became rich and could afford to do anything unless I had a family, so they could atleast be there with me doing those things. When I say family I mean that I want to get married and have kids of my own. I'm still single and I fell very lonely and worthless sometimes, so maybe getting married and having kids can give my life meaning! ;-)
