I'm catholic, and my friends keep telling me that you are not allowed to eat meat on Friday's. I tell them you are not allowed to eat red meat. But they say that you are not allowed to eat any kind of meat. So, who is right? Me or my friends?

The basic doctrine for Catholics calls for only fish. However there is no biblical doctrine for this. It all started centuries ago as the Pope's favor to a friend whose business was failing. The friend owned a - you guessed it - a fish market! Too bad he didn't own a brothel, huh?

Depends. If you're a traditional Catholic, you eat NO meat on Fridays. You can eat fish/dairy only. If you're one of the novus ordo Catholics (most Catholic churches you see today are) I don't know what they're doing these days. You can probably eat whatever you want. I would also like to add that the traditional Catholics fast/abstain (eating no meat and eating only once per day) on Fridays YEAR round--not just during Lent. If you're going to do it, do it right. In my opinion, anyone OTHER than the priest and the altar boys who are up on the altar during mass should be shot. What's up with Catholic churches having bands now? It's all BS if you ask me.

This is Lent and the traditional thing is to not eat any meat on Fridays until Good Friday. Not every one thinks the same I am not a Catholic but am not eating meat on Friday's either.

My Uncle is a Catholic preist, and so I asked him for you. He said if you're practicing lent, then you dont want to eat any meat including chicken on friday's. He did say it was okay to eat fish products though. So in answer to your question you are right about the fish.

Catholics are to abstain from flesh meats on Fridays and Ash Wednesday during Lent. That includes beef, chicken, pork and lamb. You can eat fish and seafood. Here are some sites with more details for you.

Until April 9 you are not allowed to eat red meat, which are beef, pork, lamb, and any other red meat. You can eat fish, turkey, and chicken because they are white meat. That's how the rule goes.

Your friends are right. You are allowed to eat fish and shrimp, but not meat (not even white meat)

They do not follow this rule anymore, but a lot of older Catholics tend to stick to fish because that is what they grew up following.
