from the anatomy point of view, the more sex guys get, the higher the chance is that it's their kid that gets created. It's also the reason for the shape, it acts like a plunger in case you're following someone up, the act will "plunge" out previous so they can leave their own.
It's all about propgation of the species, natural selection and... well... whose is bigger.
Same reason why spider monkeys are hung like a horse, but silverbacks aren't... only one guy's getting any with the apes(the one that beat all the other guys up), but the monkeys are bein mammals(again, and again, and again).

Or maybe it has to do with years ago, during the "caveman" times when people had to breed a lot b/c they had to survive in really harsh conditions, and that "need to breed" still exists?
