Breaks the sentence as follows:

Sawat - blessing
Dee - good

So Sawadee is good blessing.

The Ka at the end is a polite expression as spoken by a female. The Thai male will end the sentence with Khrap.

This greeting is used when first meeting and also at the end of the meeting. Much like Aloha.

Other answers missed a further variant. In the North of Thailand women will say Sawadee Jhow instead of Sawadee Ka. It still means hello or good bye but is a local dialect difference.

Sawatdee...is a greeting like hello in English. You put Kaa at the end for a female speaker and Krup for male speaker.

You usually bow your head a little and a "wai" hand like prayer-like as a sign of respect.

Sawadee is a greeting, hello, goodbye, etc. Ka is used by females and Khrup is used by males. So, Sawadee Ka would be a Hello from a female.
