My daughter just turned 9 less than a month ago. She has always been a picky eater, she is about 4'6" and weighs about 60 lbs. Lately she talks about being "fat" and about the beginning of January she started to use excuses to get out of eating with the rest of the family. In mid-February we took her out to a fancy restaurant for her birthday. She ate about 1/2 of her kids meal, and said she had to go to the bathroom. Since I could see it from where we were sitting, I let her go alone. My mother-in-law went in a few minutes later and caught her putting her finger down her throat to make herself vomit. She has lost about 10 lbs over the last three months, I know this is not excessive, but she doesn't have any extra to lose. Could this be the start of anorexia, or could it just be a phase? Does anyone have any ideas to help?

You could ask a therapist to be sure, but it very well could be.

I was anorexic in high school, and if all she wants is to lose weight that does seem like it might be. I'd talk to a therapist or other professional before it gets too serious.

This could be the start of something serious. Kids are under a lot of peer pressure. Not only that but we live in a world where how you look is important. Kids are never to young to start wondering if they are the right size. All it takes is one stupid comment by another kid and there self esteem can drop really quickly. This is something that should be monitored and watch carefully. Without her being aware that you are watching her try and encourage her to eat with the family and look and see if she goes to the bathroom as soon as she is finish eating. You also have to monitor what she is eating at school. Because she can start starving herself. Talk to her pediatrician about it and see what help they can offer. I think that you are taking the first step which is that you notice she may have a problem. You are trying to get advice. You are genuinely concern about your child. The main thing is try not to alienate her.

You should have her talk to someone before it gets worse. She's just barely getting into the tween years and already having image issues. Remember an eating disorder isn't just because she feels fat, its cause is deeper than that, most people do it because they feel a lack of control in their lives and the one thing they can control is what goes in their bodies. Ask her doctor for suggestions on therapists.

I would take her to talk to someone as well. It doesn't sound right at all. If there is something wrong you need to take action while she is young.
