Coffee Soup

Brew some coffee
Place two slices of bread on a plate
Spoon the coffee over the bread to saturate
Pour a small amount of milk or cream over the pieces and spread it around with your fork
Then sprinkle it with some sugar.

This was a way to use up day old bread and left over coffee. It is actually very good!

Owing to rationing, meat, sugar, eggs, and butter were all in short supply. There were "meatless" days and "sugarless" days to conserve on those foods and help the war effort.

Recipes using honey were very popular, since honey (unlike sugar) was not rationed. This is a WWII British recipe for honey cakes that is excellent!

Honey cakes

Ingredients

1 level teaspoon sugar
2 and a half oz. margarine
2 Level tablespoons honey
6 oz self raising flour
1 level teaspoon cinnamon.

Beat together the sugar and margarine until the mixture is soft and creamy, then add the honey. Sift together the flower and cinnamon. Add to the creamy mixture with a spoon until it binds together then work it with your fingers until it is a soft smooth dough.

Flour your hands, take off a piece of dough about the size of a large walnut and roll between the palm of hands until it is a smooth ball. Put onto a slightly greased tin and flatten slightly. Continue until all the dough has been used up.

Bake in a moderately hot oven (350 degrees) until the cakes are done - about 15 mins.

Note of caution, you will need to prepare a barbecue pit and start roasting him a full 24 hours before carving him up for dinner. Served best with some good dark German Beer, and hot German Potato salad. genießen Sie

If it's for a school project, WW2 food, then just give them some M&Ms. They were created for soldiers because they don't melt in your hand.
