I think your additional information is the most important. Although Japanese people know that America is diverse, they still associate America with caucasians. If you are Hispanic AND you have an accent, then it seems logical to conclude that you are from Latin America. They probably mistake you for a Hispanic person LEARNING English rather than an American. Your stutter and shyness may contribute to this, as well. Stuttering may lead them to think you are struggling to think of the right words, and being shy is common among foreigners in America who are afraid to speak English.

I think anytime someone has an accent, people wonder "Where are they from?", even white and black Americans, not just Asians. If you spend time with them, they will correct their error! I am sure they are not purposely offending you.

(lol) Oye, hermano, listen up: almost every body even in other countries or regions has bias, stereotypes, or prejudices. Yeh, you right, that's probably the TV and films from Hollywood giving them those impressions.

So hey, chill bro. It ain't nothin' but a thing, like the Black folk say. As Cheech Marin said in the 70's "What, me? worry?"

Look man, get over it. People, they look at me, they don't think I'm American either. People from Madrid thought I was
Catalonian. Iraqui prisoners thought I was an Egptian, not an American.

Use this to your advantage, bro! While a terrorist might be looking to kill a blond, blueyed, John Wayne type, you and me, well, you know, "we pass." So chill with that sheet, ése.

Asians as a culture push emphasis in pronounciation. It's exteremly evident if you take any language classes in Japan.

Your accent to them will read as being too lazy to pronounce things correctly for someone that should be a native speaker by origin.

Sorry to hear this. But do you mean Japanese and Asia FROM Asia? Why are you worried about their opinions? Perhaps you situation is harder than I know to deal with. But how good can THEIR English be? Not to be racist but wasn't ENGRISH.com created as a nod (or slap in the face) to Asians' poor English skills?

Some things you have to let go. However, if it really bothers you, consider taking a class or contacting a speech therapist to get rid of your stutter. James Earl Jones and John Stossel did it.

Good luck!

And what if you were English? or from South Africa or Australia? In all those places people speak different English (different entonation, way of speaking, etc, etc).
Japanese kwons a lot about tecnology but not about languages.
The idea of speaking a language in any place of this world is to be able to communicate something, as soon as the other person undestands what you mean or what u are saying the "way u say it or your entonation does not matter at all!!!

Because the Asians think more logical than they need to. They think since your accent isn't so clear cut, you musn't be American. Although, you really are.
