When I say thankyou, the response is "Uh-Huh" instead of "Your welcome". Is this an American thing?

I dont like it when people say it to me over and over or when a customer service rep for example uses it, other than that if my finacee asks me something and I say Uh-Huh once he doesnt go crazy, I am sure he would if I did it constantly. At work I would never say that to a customer

Yes it is. It's almost as if you are slapping a person right in the face. The answer uh-huh is giving an in the middle response and depending on the tone it can be taken sarcastically or as a sign of not paying attention. Most people use this when they can't think of a real answer to say.

In Canada (at least in my social circle), it's more rude to say "your welcome". It's better just to say nothing and smile or to say "uh-huh". Saying "your welcome" kind of over-emphasizes and draws too much attention to the fact that you did something for a person that necessitated a "thank-you".

Aside from saying "uh huh" following a thank-you, I'd have to concur with the majority here in deeming it rude. It's a perfect indicator that someone is not listening or doesn't care about what you're saying.

Uh isn't a be conscious. while pausing, you practice to respire and swallow rather of uttering something. those moments are what make you look on top of issues and intense. Uh, umm, errr etc do exactly no longer cut back it in public speaking. He needs education and practise...real now he sounds like an ignorant twit.

It does sound quite rude. If your mother said thank you to you for something and you replied in that way, how do you think she would respond.

Must be an American thing cause I'm from Oz and here we say, 'Your Welcome!"

Hi there Rockford...I think that in a friendly conversation it is no big deal. But if someone was speaking in public that it would be best not to use it.

I dont think it is totally American, but I dont like it, it shows total disinterest in what you try to convey.
