I ask my patients to return according to the following rough rules:
1. They've had multiple fillings, don't look after their teeth well, prone to developing new cavities - every 6 months for checkup and Xrays every 12 months.
2. Had multiple fillings but maintaining well with rare new cavities - 9 or 12 months for checkup, Xrays at 18 or 24 months.
3. Had very few fillings and maintaining well - checkups at 12 or 18 months, Xrays at 24 months.
4. Never had fillings, maintaining well - checkups at 24 months, Xrays at 24 months.
Now we also have to factor in attendance expectations. Some people don't respond to the recalls straight away and leave it stuck on their fridge for a few months, so I emphasise when they can expect their checkup reminder and why they shouldn't miss it.
As for cleaning teeth, it should only be done as necessary because the ultrasonic scalers and abrasive pastes will do long-term damage to the enamel, especially near the necks of the teeth. The benefits must outweigh the risks. Some patients I have never cleaned.

As a dental assistant we suggest to see the dentist every 6 months. That way if you begin to have a problem or if you get a cavity that you can't see, we can catch it early enough to fix it conservatively. Otherwise if you wait till something begins to hurt, you may need more extensive work like root canals, crowns, or deep root cleaning. So in fewer words, every 6 months.

I have not been to a dentist in 30 years. I never have a problem.
My teeth are great. I brush my teeth 3 times a day. use mouth wash and floss. I think all the deep cleaning is just a way for the dentist to make money.

Most Dentists will say you should be seen twice a year for the routine check ups.

Every 6 months.
The person who said they haven't been to the dentist in 30 years (YUK) they may think they don't any problems. They said they don't have any cavities and their teeth are great.....how about gum disease?

THERE IS NO RULE 'WRITTEN IN STONE' CONCERNING THIS. THE BEST ANSWER IS GIVEN BY DR. MATT.
WHY?
BECAUSE PEOPLE CARE FOR THEIR TEETH IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SOME DO BETTER THAN OTHERS. IT WOULDN'T MAKE ANY LOGICAL OR ETHICAL SENSE TO JUST TAKE PEOPLE'S MONEY EVERY 6 MONTHS IF THEY HAD A PERFECT MOUTH FREE OF ANY DECAY OR MALADY.
