About one hour prior to going to sleep stop all electronic device consumptions, drink some chamomile tea, read something and try some relaxing breathing techniques.

I spent years trying all the usual tips for sleep, including avoiding caffeine and alcohol, a regular bedtime, skipping naps, blah, blah, blah. No relaxation techniques or meditation or praying helped much. Pills did the trick.
Prescription sleep aids are fantastic, but addictive and the rebound insomnia is even worse than the original problem. Only use these if you have not really slept for a while, and don't use them more than a few nights in a row. Ambien CR works well.
Melatonin helps a bit, but too much will give you funky nightmares and leave you sleepy the next day. It's a natural hormone produced by your body, so it is not toxic or addictive. 1mg or less should do the trick.
Diphenhydramine HCL (Benadryl) works better than melatonin, and it leaves you feeling well rested, but you can build a tolerance to its sedative effects. It is also good for runny noses.
Certain herbal teas containing chamomile, valerian, skullcap, or passionflower can help too, but too much wakes you up to pee in the middle of the night.
Reading the Bible is helpful too. That can quickly bore me to sleep while keeping my mind off other things.
Oh yeah, don't have a clock anywhere you can see it.

All of these people saying Sleeping Pills! That is not the answer! Last thing you want is to fill your body with chemicals and become dependant on a sleeping aid.
Personally I have had quite a bit of trouble sleeping, not insomnia as such but I found I was a restless sleeper and it could take hours before I could sleep, so much so that when the alarm went off in the morning I would cry.
Stress in your life can have a lot to do with it, especially if you bottle it up, it becomes toxic and you cant get it off your mind. I also found that if I had a light up clock in my room I would constantly look at it when I woke up in the night and it didnt help at all.
Basically I de-stressed my life (no yoga or deep breathing just getting out of a bad job and avoiding bad relationships) and ditched my clock and I also started taking Valerian. Valerian is a herbal alternative to taking Sleeping Pills - it is like natures version of Valium. Take it two hours before bed and it just slightly relaxes you so you can get a good nights sleep.

You didn't mention how active you were during the day. Do
you get fresh air during the day? Eating less is fine, but don't
go to bed feeling hungry. Don't rely on sleeping pills. Drugs
are never ever the answer. We all have times when we feel
wired and can't sleep. You may have a lot on your mind that's preventing you from falling asleep. You may even be overthinking it. If these things are not true then try this. Read! Have a book
that you are very interested in, preferably fiction(light reading)!
Keep on reading until your eyes cannot focus anymore.
I believe that once your eyes get that heavy, tired feeling your
muscles will relax and you will fall asleep. Make sure your room
is dark and slightly cool! Works for me and I sleep thru the night!

Try a hot bath, it may relax yourself to where you can sleep. You need to make sure your stomach is full before you go to bed so you are not hungry. Turn on the tv on a black and white movie, do not force yourself to sleep just let it happen. If you start tossing and turning then get up out of the bed. Then try it again later. Try a warm glass of milk too

Tylenol PM, its over the counter, non habit forming, and will help you relax too... I sometimes take one to two about two hours before I want to sleep and continue doing normal activities. Two hours pass by and than I am completely exhausted and fall right asleep. I even have a TV on with a movie too.

Try reading if you can't fall asleep. It will make you tired. Make sure you turn out all lights and don't eat/drink a lot before bedtime... also NEVER fall asleep with the tv on.

you may have insomnia. there really is nothing you can do besides relaxing yourself by listening to relaxing music or drinking tea (or warm milk =]) if worst comes to worst, take a sleeping pill but only if you absolutely have to.
