42 is the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, according to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The Ultimate Question was never found though, and is the confusing bit about the whole 42 business. It has been speculated, however, that the question is "Pick a number, any number" though not exactly a question (this "question" is mentioned in the book).

It's from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which is a very good book. I recommend it. It's the answer to the Ultimate Question which can't be known if the answer's known because everything will implode, or something. 42 is the meaning of life and the universe and everything. I think.

42 is the answer to life, the universe and everything, from Douglas Adam's book series "The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy," which is a philosophical piece of Sci-Fi comedy.
The question of "What is the answer[42]" is 6 times 9. In base 13 [normally for math we use base 10] 6 times 9 equals 42.
