They are not equivalent.
Artificial intelligence is a computational discipline. Robotics is a mechanical discipline. While they can be integrated into the same system, they are not related.
In current technology, the highest profile implementation of artificial intelligence is in games. The rudimentary AI used in games obviously does not involve robotics.
The confusion comes from the difficulty of making a free moving robot (that is a robot that is not bolted to the floor like the ones on Assembly lines) without some sort of learning and adaptable programming. The world is not a precise place, so some sort of adaptability is needed, and it is assumed that robots, to be effective, would need some level of AI in their control systems.
To correct a couple of previous answers ... AI does exist, though only in simple applications. Car companies have been putting basic learning programming in engine control computers since the 1980's. And that is just one application that I know of. And robots can respond to, and learn from, its environment to determine its behavior. (The car computer example applies here too.)

Woohoo I love these questions!
Artificial intelligence or AI cannot be the equivalent to robotics as they are completely different topics . AI is a set of coding and programming used to guide a machine or computer or even simulate intelligence. Robotics is a type of mechanics . Robots are electronic items that can move or do tasks whether it be a robotic arm in a factory screwing on bottle lids , or a remote controlled toy for a child.
Hope thats good enough. I jsut watch i,Robot for billionth time so I wanted to answer this.

Artificial intelligence does not require the capability of motion. Robotics, by any definition, includes the capability of motion. Therefore, robotics and artificial intelligence are not equivalent.

AI is the theoretical set of parameters and logic process that would allow an inorganic object (like a computer or set of computers) to function, sustain, and decide outcomes without outside input. A robot only makes decisions based upon defined parameters but never decides how or when it changes those parameters....a human does that.

There are plenty of robots around but no AI so that should answer your question.
