I'm a riddle in nine syllables.
An elephant, a ponderous house,
A melon strolling on two tendrils.
O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers!
This loaf's big with its yeasty rising.
Money's new-minted in this fat purse.
I'm a means, a stage, a cow in calf.
I've eaten a bag of green apples,
Boarded the train there's no getting off.

No it is not a riddle it is a poem by Sylvia Plath.

here a lil more info...........................

The appreciation of poetry begins with one simple requirement--read the poem more than once. No one memorizes his favorite song the very first time he hears it on the radio. More likely, he will hear the song several times before learning all the words, recognizing the bass line, anticipating a particular guitar solo or singing along. Even more likely, he buys the CD and listens to the song deliberately, with focused concentration before truly understanding and appreciating it.

The same goes for a poem, only it's not as easy as just listening to the radio. It requires thought and imagination, even a conscious participation on the part of the reader. It's something we contemplate and share in rather than something we "play in the background."

For starters, read the following poem, "Metaphors," by Sylvia Plath once to yourself and once out loud. Consider the words and their literal meanings. Try to imagine a concept or idea that unifies all of the various objects and thoughts presented in the poem, then click on the link to Sylvia Plath, learn a little about the author, and read the poem again.

Now that you're familiar with the poem and it's author (remember, it's important not to assume that the voice within the poem is automatically the poet herself, but rather a fictitious persona representing some of the views or attitudes that poet might have), go to the following interactive text and see what you think of the suggestions and images offered there.
