"ichiban" literally means "number one". but sometimes it would depend on how it is used like in a conversation or expressing something. eg: if u are going to compare things and to choose which is the best for you, you would likely to say, [kore wa "ichiban" ii desu ne], meaning this one is the "best". in a group if you are given numbers and you get "number one", you would say: watashi no bangou wa, "ichiban" desu. in choosing foods, if you say, "this is my favorite one", you would say in japanese, kore wa watashino "ichiban" sukina tabemono desu. there are still some usage of the word "ichiban", but just a few of them i have to say here for you as samples.

Ichi: One
Ban: A counter for numbers.

Therefore: number one. It's used for the best as well (ichiban suki = my favorite).
