It turns and the arm starts moving to the record, but as it goes to the middle of the record and makes a loud click, instead of starting at the outside.

Do you have the correct speed selected? The old 45 singles were much smaller than the 33 LP's -- so the arm would move to the middle. If you haven't played a lot of records recently, you may not be able to detect the speed by just looking at the record.

You may also have a problem with the linkage to the arm. It may be broken, bent, etc. so that it can only act like there is a 45 single on the turntable.
