I want to get a new puppy. I have done some research, but not too much. Two dogs I have in mind are the Bichon Frise and West Highland White Terrier. There is a whole list of dogs I have stored on my computer, but We have a large house with a large backyard and and medium sized front yard. We live near a park, so I can give the dog a walk to the park 3-5 days a week. The youngest child in the house is 10 years old, but can handle a dog. We own already a 4 year old cat and a 6 year old Shih-Tzu. I am in Middle School, but can handle the responsiblities of a dog. I will be gone part of the day, though. My mom will be home most of the day though. I do need a dog that is small. I would prefer one that is small enough to fit in a dog carrying kennel or purse or can wear some dog designed clothes on occasion. Tell me about the abobe dogs, or suggestions of other dogs. I love mixed breeds, by the way.

If you loved mixed breeds, save a poor dog from the animal shelter.

It depends on what you're looking for. Both Bichons and Westies are known for having skin problems; have you considered that? This often means that they will need to be on an expensive diet to prevent the problems, and the medication for these issues is often VERY expensive. Westies are known for being sturdy dogs for their size, and they are very strong and sometimes stubborn. Bichons are generally a little smaller, and are more of a "foo foo" dog than a Westie.

You said you love mixed breeds- why don't you check out your local shelters for small dogs there? There are thousands of little dogs waiting to be rescued, and mixed breeds are known for being MUCH healthier than purebred dogs.

you are very lucky, what a fun thing to do pick a new friend, if I had a choice based on what you've said I'd pick the bishon, I like the temperment better and the coat is nicer, and if you pick a female, they are usally smaller and would fit in a designer case.

Why not go for a standard Poodle? they have wonderful natures and as a bonus they don't shed their hair - yes it is hair on a poodle
