just heard that online...is it true?

It is true that the dog is impure (najis) and if Muslims come into physical contact with a dog (or the saliva, urine, feces or other impurities emanating from it), then the area of contact must be ritually cleansed.

It is also impermissible for Muslims to keep dogs as pets. Muslims can only keep "working" dogs for security, agricultural or hunting purposes.

HOWEVER, dogs (and all other animals) are a part of Allah's creation and thus belong to Allah SWT. Ill treatment of Allah's creation is a grave sin and we will be questioned about it on the Day of Judgment.

The gravity of this can be illustrated by the hadith (sayings of Muhammad) relating to the prostitute who gave a drink of water to a thirsty dog and had all her sins forgiven and on the other hand, the woman who was thrown into Hellfire for starving her cat.

I hope this answers your question.

Sunshine is right. Dogs aren't bad and many Muslims have them. I, myself, love dogs! :) But the saliva of a dog is impure and therefore must be kept away from the place of prayer which is pure. If a dog's wet nose (or tongue) touches a Muslim then he/she has to perform ablution (the ritual cleansing before prayer) again before the prayer can be said. Prayer is to be said in a state of purity out of reverence and love to God.

And no Muhammad didn't hate dogs.

Nope, it just depends on personal preference. I'm Muslim and I don't despise dogs.

No. Dogs are wonderful animals. Although as Sunshine said its their saliva which is impure. Therefore dogs won't be allowed everywhere such as sleeping in ones bed!

No, in the Quran it talks about not touching them or having them in the house or near food. But It does not say to hurt or scorn them.

Absolutely.

According to the Bukari, Muhammad had a lot of hatred for dogs. Its crazy, but true, and its not just one verse...he babbles on an on about dogs.

The Quran says that Muhammad's conduct represents the perfect path to heave, which is why Muslims try to closely emulate Muhammad's every deed and thought, thus, it is very common to see "dog-hate" in the Islamic community.

No...

It's just that dog's saliva is not pure, so they should be kept away from the place of prayer.

Peace.
