Wait for the baby. The dog will then come into a full family and will not have to be trained post baby.

Well ... new-born babies and dogs aren't usually a great mix anyways ... But if you are planning on having a dog around regardless, I'd suggest arranging for the encounter to be when the dog is around 4-5 months if possible, when they are still in socialization period, but not completely discovering everything about the world. If he is already used to the house, it can also be a plus so that the whole situation is not overwhelming.
Really, there is no absolute answer ... you'll be fine either way, just take it slow and easy and make sure the baby is NEVER left unsupervised when the dog is out. I've heard and seen too many stories !!

If it was me I would wait until after the baby is born. I am in no way an expert on dogs but here is my theory. If you get the puppy before the baby was born and suddenly when the baby comes the dog isn't getting as much attention it will get jealous of the new baby and may not be safe around the child. Also if you get the dog now, when the baby comes you would be more attatched to the dog and it would be harder to give it up if you had to. Say the baby was allergic to dog fur, or you found out that the dog wasn't good around kids, it would be alot easier to give it up than it would if you had grown attatched to it.

There are so many factors to this question, are you getting a puppy or a young adult dog? What breed ? And have you guys had dogs before - just as far as how good you will be with a dog PLUS the added mischief of a new grandbaby. I think if you have time now before the baby comes, do it - while you have the time to devote to a new dog and instill good habits. I would alos borrow some of the baby's used clothing (that smells like her) and bring it home to your dog before she comes. Remember, its better to teach good habits than to break bad ones.

Buy a dog that love kids!! Then buy the dog after the baby comes that way the dog doesnt feel that the baby is intruding on it teritory. Some dogs get very jelous of other dogs and perhaps babies. Probably no small dog.

I would suggest getting the dog before the baby. That way you could know how it acts around children and how to train it. Get the dog used to life with more people and kids besides your immediate family ~ parks, playgrounds ect. :)

I would wait untill the baby is born and has been to your house several times to inprint its scent on your things. This way the baby is not the new commer to your house, the dog is. Congradulations on the grand baby!!

If your granddaugher isn't going to be living in your house, what does it matter whether you wait or not? It's your house, do what you feel is better for you.
