Don't try to work on the computer, read, or watch tv. Go into a dark room and lie down with a cold cloth on the forehead and over the eyes. Take some acetamenaphen or ibuprophen before lying down.

If you go to a store called sage they sell natural migraine relief, it is called peppermint halo, the peppermint in it gets rid-of your migraine. Or if you go to an organic store you can just buy peppermint essential oil. And just get a few drops and put it in your hairline. You can use other medicine and stuff.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

Yes darlin - Watching that dear morning doctor on CNN, I learned a long time ago that it is a common instance that people experiencing migraines are temporarily missing some basics in their brain's biochemistry.

The vitamin B3 and the protein (amino acid) L-phenylalanine are low when you experience a migraine.

You probably already know that the blood vessels narrowing - and then suddenly expanding set off migraines.

...Too much B3 causes damage to your nerves, and apparently there's health risks to overdoing L-phen. as well. You don't need a lot, so never over do it.

Also - the spice, ginger helps with nausea and peppermint relaxes muscles. Ginger ale can handle the nausea and Altoids are fine - taken like aspirin. Don't take peppermint oil, it can be toxic in high doses.

I give my father one B3 vitamin and one 500 mg amino acid tablet with a coka cola or ginger ale and 5 Altoids when he's in the throws of one of his migraines. It has often caused them to break and relieve in just 30 minutes... and he gets those horrible cluster migraines.

It helps me with my migraines - and often with my bad sinus headaches.

Diet sodas also have that amino acid... so if you're away from home - go for a diet cola to head off the migrain. (But don't do diet sodas a lot - I found a report by a biochemist that said Nutrasweet is linked to brain cancers and seizures in those who consume a lot of it. Be careful.)

Also - stay hydrated. Water is a great preventative. Just don't drink it by the gallon like the lady in that radio contest! Yikes!

This isn't a cure. Your doctor needs to guide you on the best treatment, but this is a help to shorten duration.

Be well, hon. --De
