China has gone through great social and ecomonic changes during past ten years. Cities like Shanghai, Shenzhen are modernized greatly. Most small cities also made big progress. But the sad part is that many cultural and tradtional elements were damaged during the process.

I live in Shanghai and it is very westernized and modern, BUT, I have been to cities where people still do not have running water in side their homes, they people are still pretty traditional even in Shanghai, if you go out to the countryside it is still VERY traditional in some places, traditional clothes and practices, local religions and deities, in parts like Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan you can see very traditional ways of life that have not changed for 100's of years. TO give you an example, an American girl I know just married a Chinese guy, the men in his family carried her in a traditional "sedan" and the man rode on a horse to his parent's house where the bride served the parents tea and there were a lot of other things to but this answer would be too long

After The May 4th Movement in 1919 ,many Leftist intellectuals just like Lu xun advocated to abolish the traditional Chinese culture and to learn the Western culture , many measures have been taken ,and this was influential and necessary at that time ,cuz if they did't do that ,china would be subjugated
But 5000 years traditional culture can't be cancelled in 50 years , most elements remain , in recent years , more and more took the traditional culture seriously , throug the chinese new year , you can see that

If you go to a 5 star hotel or anything high end, you will experience great western culture. The service is impeccable.
Anything else, prepare to squat down to poop. You can experience what the locals are like and enjoy some chinese culture. Here, the food is great, the wine is fine yet cheap, the company is fun.

The cities are modernizing and, unfortunately, many hutongs are being replaced with modern facilities in the process. However, in the countryside you can still see traditional life as most villages don't have the money to modernize and the government isn't concerned with investing in them.

Depending where you intend to visit. Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, very very modern. Chengdu, Xian, Suzhou... growing. On the whole, China is rather modern.

China is communist. They are all about their own personal kind of manifesto! It is their bible, their nationality, their mother and their God...
They have not been as respectful of their land and tradition as Japan. They have destroyed their water, their land and the landscape for the Industrial and for commerce.
