On (American) Aircraft Carriers do they always have aircraft in the air for defense. If they dont then do they put fighters on a alert 5 (with pilots in the cockpit) sitting for hours on end in the aircraft. I would assume in war zones they do that but all I know is from the movies, which are not that accurate. Or do they just trust the air defense ships to protect the carrier.
and I am not trying to figure out anything sensitive, feel free to tell me how we did it 20 or 30 years ago in Vietnam. Thanks

No. not at all times... mostly in routine patrols, training exercises and during deployments.

Carriers in war zones are there doing their job. They are flying sorties or missions nearly 24 hours a day. They send recon planes up to go take pictures of things and check out what is going on. Intelligence is sent through message traffic to let the ship know what to do about whatever is going on around them also. Yes, all the smaller ships around the carrier are ready to defend her as well. Lots of technology is aboard a carrier and nothing goes un-noticed. Movies are just movies and an American Aircraft Carrier is the most bad *** ship on the water.

It's really hard to say because it varies so much. Most of the time the SAR helicopter is at Ready 30 except during launch and recovery when it's in the air or on Ready 5.

Everything else is at Ready 30 unless there's some reason to be at a higher state of readiness. In a hot zone like the Persian Gulf they run an Air Cap with tanker support and an E2-C Hawkeye.

Modern technology provides aircraft carriers to detect hostile aircraft through radars. Pilots need not stay in the cockpits for a long time.

no they don't have people on alert sitting in the planes , but they do have a fleet of about 4 or 5 naval ships armed to teeth surrounding the aircraft carrier
