All puppies, regardless of breed, tend to be hyper and easily excitable. You might be better off adopting an adult if you want a more relaxed dog. Poodles are typically known for their lack of shedding, but if you're not the poodle type, you can try using a dog selector to decide what type of breed is best. Then contact a rescue agency to see if they have any adults for you.

Animal planet has a pretty good one http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do

How about a cockapoo (cocker spaniel/poodle cross)

Characteristics of the Cockapoo:
The Cockapoo derives from the Poodle its extraordinary intelligence and non shedding coat. (Realistically, no dog exists that does not shed, so a better term would be low-shed.) When combed and brushed, some hair does come out, but it is not likely that you will find dog hairs on the carpet, etc. Because the Poodle is commonly referred to as non shedding, this term will be used. Likewise, there is very little dander, which is the main culprit in allergies to dogs. This makes the Cockapoo the ideal choice for those who have problems with allergies.

The Cockapoo's sweet nature, patient disposition and sturdy build come from the Cocker Spaniel. The resulting personality is unparalleled in its ability to relate to people and children. They are famous for being loyal, affectionate, open and friendly, non destructive, eager to please, easily trained, vigorous, clean, healthy and long lived (18-22 years). The dog's flexibility and range of sizes makes it ideal for a number of special situations.

The AKC actually has a questionnaire type thing of which breed is right for you. you may find the dog you want from there.

Yorkies are great dogs, but are generally not super mellow, they are a terrier and another name for terrier is Terror. I have them and love them, but they are definitely not for everyone.

We had a toy poodle growing up and she was a great lap dog companion that you could take anywhere. believe me, 20 years ago we were ahead of the times carrying her in our purse to the grocery store. VERY laid back.

Once you choose a breed, you may want to search your area for a rescue group for that breed, it could save you the hassle/hyperness of a puppy.

Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy your new family member.

A bulldog would meet all those, but they get a few pounds heavier than 30 pounds. But they're very sweet and mellow, but you gotta be able to look at that "so ugly it's cute" face.

Not a beagle, that are incredibly hyper!

A pug is another good one, they're active puppies but mellow once they hit maturity.

Personally I'd go w/ the mini schnauzer. They are hypoallergenic, non-shedding and weigh between 11-15 pounds. They are very hardy and not a delicate dog by far. I take mine on walks every morning and afternoon and she just sleeps the rest of the time. She is good at keeping an eye on the house, she alerts me whenever there is a person at the door. They are very loyal. Only negative is that you'll need to take it to the groomer about every 2 months for a trim.

I would suggest a mixed breed. If you don't want shedding try something that is mixed with a poodle. They are small and smart! I have a pomeranian poodle and he is a very smart boy. Never sheds, but he needs regular haircuts. He is only 12 lbs, and that is with the few extra fat pounds.
