Your puppy probably expelled his anal glands. This happens very often when dogs get startled. In the anus, there are two small glands that carry a fluid in them. If you watch your dog, just after he defecates, he will probably bob his tail up and down a few times- this is him trying to empty these glands. This is a natural thing and can't really be prevented; some dogs just do it when they're scared. The good news is, most puppies grow out of it. You don't see too many adult dogs who have this problem. The only thing you can really do is try to be more graceful :)
The smell of anal glands is probably the worst smell I've ever smelled, and I would suggest that you wash your sheets to get rid of it.. The quicker you do it the better, once the secretion sets in, it will be harder to get rid of.

Dogs, of either gender, may wet the floor a little when they are startled. This is probably what you were smelling. As long as he feels comfortable and secure in the home (and you don't trip over him anymore) then you probably won't have any more trouble with this. If it becomes a problem, though, you might want to consult a pet trainer.

I guess you really did scare him the poor thing! He must have express his anal glands just a bit. That's the fishy smell. Pee doesn't have that kind of smell.
Be more careful next time! Now go and find the poor thing and apologies :)

He probably voided his anal glands - that happens when dogs get scared. I'm sure you're not traumatizing your dog, so I wouldn't worry about it happening again.
Voiding anal glands is part of "doggie maintenance" but shouldn't be done too often, and unfortunately, there is not much that can be done to prevent them from emptyiung them when they are scared !

They don't spray but he may have just urinated a little. The fishy smell could be the result of something he ate.

Dogs sometimes tend to do that. They pee sometimes if they get scared.
