Paul was trained under Rabbinic Judaism, and was actually a persecutor of the Christians in the earliest times of Christianity soon after Jesus' death. Paul was eventually saved on the road to Damascus from Jerusalem, where he was actually going to persecute Christians more. The other apostles were also discipled directly by Jesus, whereas Paul first encountered Him after His death and resurrection and was taught by Him in that way, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Paul was more or less opted in as an apostle by God himself. This is just a guess on my part. Would like to hear other opinions on the matter.

He was a Roman citizen - and a Jew.
He, unknowingly, wrote what would become the majority of the New Testament.
He may have been the only apostle to speak before Caesar.

He never met Jesus(personaly). He wrote more books of the Bible than them. He was a Born Roman...Not a born Jew. Paul was once a pharisee when he was called saul, not a fisherman or a tax collector. Paul helped spread the word with them.Read the BIBLE!

He was an apostle to the Gentiles and was much more fearless than the others. He was born a Roman citizen and vicously tried to murder Christians before he became one.

Paul was not one of the original twelve apostles and Paul came upon his knowledge by divine revelation.
(Galatians 1:11) But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
(Galatians 1:12) For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

He met Jesus after His resurrection and ascension rather than prior to that time like the other apostles.
