I train my dogs because I do not want out of control 70-90 lb dogs jumping on people, begging at the table, strewing trash all over my house.

I have 5 doberman pinschers, all with very well socialize with good manners at home and away from home.

The same reason you educate children : so that they can live in harmony with other people. You need to set up communication so that everyone knows their place. There is nothing more unnerving for an animal not to know who stands where, and how the hierarchy is set. You can't get a dog to think human, but we are able to think "dog" and adapt our behavior to make them understand which behaviors are acceptable and which are not. The tricky part comes when you have to draw the line between respecting the dog's personality versus making him your robot - let's face it, a Scottish terrier isn't as compliant as a Golden retriever ! That's why it's also so important to chose a dog that fits your personality and lifestyle too.

And to answer the question briefly - why is it necessary to train dogs ? Well, try to get one and not train it ... and see what happens :-) it'll all make sense.

Final note - be careful with dog "trainers" - there are some good ones and there are some bad ones. Make sure you are picking the right kind - you may want to chat about that with your vet - we all go through behaviorism classes in school and have basic knowledge about what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to dog training.

There are lots of reasons for training your dog and some are obvious and some are not.

An untrained dog can be very dangerous, not to mention a pain in the neck. Imagine a dog who would not do anything it was told and just did what he or she wanted? We train our children from day one so they may function in the real world, and this is why we do this with dogs. Training a dog may also save it's life too - for instance if it was standing on a busy road, you need to be able to call it and have it come to you!

Dogs are social animals and are very closely related to wolfs. They are used to a hierarchy system and if you do not train them to think otherwise, they will take control of that pack (your family) and will assume the role of alpha dog. A dog who does this is dominant and you do not want this. For your information, this is very stressful for a dog, they do not want to be alpha leader but without training and guidance they will think that they need to be.

Also, socialisation with other dogs and people is very very important.

It is necessary that you can control your dog and so that your dog does not become a menace and is a good canine citizen.
Most people want a dog that will listen when the need arises. If you do not care about being able to cotrol your dog then don't train it.

You don't HAVE to. For instance, if you have a dog that typically stays outside and is well behaved from the beginning you wouldn't have problems. If however they're inside dogs then you would at least have to train them to let you know you need to go outside. It's simply a matter of getting them to act the way you wish them to act...

You need to train them, for example, to go to the door when they have to go to the bathroom, so you dont have to pick up a mess. train them not to beg while you're eatting, train them to recognise that YOUR the boss so they dont get agressive or badly behaved if they feel the need to be in charge. Dogs are pack animals, someone's got to be the leader, and if you're not, they will be, so you have to train them.

it's really not necessary. Unless you like don't have a fence or something there's really no reason to train them. If you have visitors often, though, you don't want your pets going nuts so at that time it's good for you to be able to communicate with and tell them what to do.

having and untrained dog it like letting your kids run wild....not only could they hurt themself they could hurt others... they funny thing is that most ppl who have both and don't take time to teach them anything kids and dog can do anything with no rules so they'll all run wild.... when i see kids running around i think itsn't that nice for you to bring ur wild child to the store to annoy others? and when i see dogs walking their ppl i i think should i walk by u u have no control of ur dog will the dog try to attack my dogs...my kid????.. what is the matter with them to let a dog (or a kid) get away with that? my kids and pets have rules they know the rules and to break the rules means the right punishment for kid or dog or even cat....its not harsh but its firm.

so if you don't train ur dog...and it gets to be to big for u to handle because u couldn't take an hr or so outta ur day to train...so u belame the dog..Oh he's just so dumb!!!...no its ur fault... he's not dumb...

It is for their safety above all. A well trained dog can operate in society. If it harms a human, it can be euthanized. If it harms property, it can harm itself. For example, chewing wood. And if nothing else, it keeps us from wanting to strangle them. LOL!
