Do car insurance companies offer discounts on car insurance to those enlisted in the military. I'm going to be going off to the air force soon and I've decided i'm definately not taking my car. If I happen not to sell it either and just leave it at home, how do car insurance companies help with that? Do they give discounts to those away on military duty?

Call your company and talk to them. Several companies that I know of offer lower rates while you're deployed. But they all have different details so it pays to call around and check. I know for Geico you can drop the insurance cost a ton but you can basically only start the car a couple times a month to keep the battery charged. If you move over 20 miles or so a month you have to pay back the higher rate or loose your insurance.

No discounts. When you are going to be away for a long time, and the car will not be driven, you can normally just carry fire and theft with the collision and liability off the policy until you get back.

It's almost always best to borrow from a military credit union since they understand things like this without long drawn-out explanations.

If there is a lien on the car, you will have to have it insured still. If not, depends on the state. Most places don't give you a discount because you are in the military, but they will give you a discount if your car is parked in a secure area and not being driven (unless you still owe money on it)
Good luck!

Some give discounts, you will have to check with your insurer. Also check your state laws on insuring vehicles. Even if you do not drive it, and it sits parked in your driveway for a year or more, the state may require you to maintain coverage.

My brother kept it insured while he was in the states, when he went overseas, he put it in the garage, put it on blocks & removed the tires. He cancelled his insurance until he came home & wanted to drive it again. He did not owe on the car.
