Yes i have, you dont really learn anything other than the basics i definitly wasnt able to understand half the conversations i partake in with native speakers. Not worth it in my opinion, i wish i would have just taken a class in america like im doing now in the first place...then when you know the language go there to improve it if you still want to. goog luck

I studied (Mandarin) Chinese in the Republic of China for over 6 years. I would say after my first year, I knew the phonics well enough to look up any word in a dictionary, and memorize its meaning. I learned the basics (gambits), recognized the different tones, and did not write. For proficiency, unless you really apply yourself and are linguistically gifted, two years (or more) will be needed.

I agree with above. I am a Chinese teacher at EXEL Chinese for foreigners study Chinese. You know there are over 20 students in a class. The students do not have enough time to communicate with teachers in a class. In one year living in China, you may be able to do with your daily life easily in Chinese, but if you want to have the abilities for self developing, you have to pay much time. Well, if you choose one-to-one class, the effect is much better. Because by one-to-one mode your teacher and you could make your study plan for the progress. Nevertheless if you want to choose to enjoy an one-to-one class, you must not study in China and you can study it online with Chinese teacher. It is effective especially for beginners.
Studying it live online, you can save a lot of money and time. When you have studied adequate Chinese, you could travel around China to use them and then you would feel you had improved very fast.

it rather is an fairly confusing, if no longer impossible question, to furnish a suitable answer to. It relies upon plenty on how rapidly you may get carry of the language - some persons are greater advantageous at languages than others - aswell as different factors, alongside with who you spend time with (with chinese language people each and all the time?) etc.. even nevertheless, to furnish you an occasion, i in my view studied 5 days a week for around 3 hours an afternoon for around 6 months. exterior of sophistication, I spoke with different chinese language newbies who did no longer talk English. This allowed my to get to around Intermediate point. some people found out speedier than me, some slower - it relies upon on how plenty attempt you place into it - even nevertheless it rather is a hazard to become fluent.
