Speaking as someone who's had experience in this area (from my own mistake), drug stores like Walgreens sell a product in the hair color aisle. It is a hair color remover which I think is made by Clairol, but I could be wrong. This remover is much safer for your hair than stripping it with bleach and much easier to do yourself.
Since dying your hair black usually does not involve bleach (because you are darkening, not lightening), you can use this product almost immediately without much damage to your hair, though it is probably safer to wait a week or so. The color remover will take the black hair color out of your hair. Unfortunately, it will also remove some of your natural color (resulting in an unfortunate shade of orange), so you will have to invest in brown hair dye. Once you use the remover, you can immediately dye over it with the brown hair dye.
This method is much cheaper than getting it fixed at a hair salon. While getting your hair colored at a salon doesn't cost all that much, getting your hair color mistakes fixed is very expensive (running around $130 in my neck of the woods).
I hope this helps.

Oh my, I made that mistake when I was 16 and it looked horrid on me lol I could not afford to go to a hair salon to get it fixed right and every other color i tried just made it look worse so in the end I had had to shave my head, luckily it was the start of summer break. I just wore a hat all summer. Hopefully you can afford to get it bleached and go back to your own color. Good luck.
Edit to add: This was many, many yrs ago when I did this so they may have some OTC remedies you can try. Not quite sure.

I hope you didn't use permanent hair color, because if you did, the only way to dye it back is to bleach it and then dye it. I dyed my hair black, and had to wait almost two years for it to grow out before I could color it again...

Black?
Sorry, but I don't think brown will cover it up. Ask a specialist. I dyed mine using temporary in October, and it didn't come out. But, then again, I like it. Maybe you could dye it blonde to lighten it to brown, or something. I have no idea.

It would be hard to dye brown over black because the colour coats your hair, why not try burgundy auburn over the black that way it would look brownish and have a burgundy highlight over it. You can go to a salon and ask them their opinion.

u cant die black hair. YOu have to go to the salon and have it striped, and then they can die it back your original color. DO NOT attempt to strip it yourself you might end up with all your hair falling out (thats what happened to my cuzin) AND why the hell did you think it would be a good idea to die your hair black in the first place? what a mess tsk tsk!

you might have to go to a salon. once you make a coloring mistake, only time or a pro can help. i've had 2 coloring mistakes (purple and bright orange) and the only solution was a stylist. they did a fantastic job! i would recommend Hair Cuttery. good price and good work.
