I have just bought a computer with windows XP on and the version is not an original but a copy. This means I cannot update windows or windows media player which I need to have working. Is there any other way than buying an original windows XP disc that I can validate my computer to allow updates?

The short answer is no. The only way that might be possible is if you get someone to download the file onto a flash card or something and then install it on your pc. The problem is that with windows XP the registry is so complicated that other security updates are downloaded and if you don't have them the updates for media player might not work. I do sympathise with you but microsoft have pretty much got it covered

Like every one has said here already you can not update or install anything with out the product key to validate you copy of windows. why on earth did you buy a computer knowing that the copy of windows you had was not genuine,
what you are going to have to do now is first go out and buy a copy of windows xp which is not that expensive to buy and then remove the old copy of windows from your computer and then install the genuine copy on to your computer and enter the product key when it asks you to do so, this is the only way around this problem. good luck

Hi.

The way I would get round this problem would to d/l an older version of windows media player.... eg WM10..... it will work fine for anything you'll really need to do. You'll be able to get the latest edition that's out just now in a year or two.... ie when they upgrade WM yet again Use the link below and that should be you sorted........ personally I'd stick with iTunes.

Other than that, now that 'Vista' is here, you should be able to get XP much cheaper anyway and it would save you all these hassles.

You can do it on line using Microsoft help, but it costs more than an OEM copy of XP!
There is only one real solution, buy the O/S,(£ 90, approx), then you will have the codes, and you can get the updates and validate

when you install a brand new version of windows it also installs a unique key. so when the user connects to the internet, that key is sent to the microsoft update servers telling them that only this PC will use updates with this IP address, and any other incoming connections for updates is void.

so you have no other way of updating apart from buying a new windows. another way is to manually look for updates in form of .exe files. these are rare and mainly come in service packs (easy to find in google).

good luck

No, you need to buy a legal copy to get upgrades. If you bought the computer from a reputable supplier, they should have installed a legal OEM version at least.
