The 6 ft wire is a good solution, since it's about the correct size for a well-designed FM antenna. However, the wire is closer to the 300 ohm impedance than the 75 ohm input on the receiver, so try to use one of those 300-to-75 ohm matching transformers (receiver probably came with one -- link below) and split the wire into two 3 ft lengths (one to each connection on the transformer). You'll probably find it easier to hide the 3 ft lengths compared to a 6 ft length, too.

It depends on how strong the signals are in your area. I just use a six foot length of 16 guage wire, plug it into the 75 ohm antenna input and stretch it straight up from the receiver, and it gives me good reception.
