According to a survey (link below) a third of young drivers (out of a thousand polled) say that playing racing games causes them to speed and drive in a more dangerous manner.

I've grown up playing video games, and I still do regularly and I drive, and I've yet to hit 20. I've got views and theories of my own of the matter, and it's probaby not a black-and-white thing, but what do you think?

I'm well past my teens, but after playing GTA Vice City for a long time, I found myself finding opportunities to jump my car off of ramps. I know better than to do it, but I always found it weird that those thoughts went through my mind. I'm sure that if the game has a real enough feel to it, it could affect young drivers' mentality on safe driving.

I always take a break after playing racing games before I go for a drive. A 5 minute sit down and a cup of tea calms me down so I drive more safely.
I would not recommend 2 hours on GTA Vice City and the rushing out to drive down the M62.
Overall though I think these games improve reaction speed so if one plays sensibly then I think they can benefit drivers.

No i dont think so. I firmly believe that lack of training and a p1ss easy driving test leads to young drivers driving badly.
Incidently old motorists are more dangerous than young ones. Just yesterday I nearly had the side of my car ripped off by an old lady in a purple Nissan Micra in a car park, she obviously had no idea where her car began or ended. Then on the way home I found myself behind a man in his 50s or 60s at some lights to cross a busy main road. The lights went green and he went halfway accross the main road then inexplicably stopped. Leaving me sat in the middle of the road with cars taking evasive action to get round me. There was nearly a nasty pile up due to this old boy not knowing what planet he was on. I had to pull along side him to get out of the way. Its not just young drivers that are dangerous

i think that the car racing games need to have more realistic damage and consequences involved.

Don't get me wrong, I like to play the video games (alot!) But as a responsible adult -41 years on this planet I think that to play, you should have to buy the car (in the game), buy insurance, buy fuel, buy your performance parts and have to work at a crappy low wage job nights while going to school in the day. And, if you wreck somebody's car. you should have to get it repaired.

It will get people to understand the realities of driving better than NFS most wanted does.

After the first need for speed game I started driving fast, but not dangerously. I have since got over it.

No, kids aren't stupid, they know the difference between a game and real life.
