Try placing metallic strips that blow in the wind, the sound/ movement is a good deterrent. Birds catch on pretty fast to decoys ( plastic snakes and owls) and will ignore them often after just a few days as it doesn't take to long for them to figure out it's a fake. Using scent as a bird deterrent is not very effective considering most birds cannot smell. You can also discourage them from landing on an area if it is wide enough, you can hang red(visible) threads to form a grid above the surface where they keep landing, this will discourage some birds from trying to land. If you can you can also try to modify the area so they can no longer nest there (or block the area ).If however the bird nest is already built and there are eggs, depending on the species there is a good chance that it is protected (anything other than rock pigeon, starling, and house sparrow is pretty much protected) and you'll have to wait until they leave and prevent the situation from happening again.

WD-40!! Birds can not handle the sweet smell, just spray in on the "railing" on the porch :)

I put rubber snakes on my banisters and on the porch, and the birds have stayed away.

(I had a problem with birds pooping on everything!)
Hope it works for you.
