It's just a tradition to eat it on your 1 year anniversary. You don't have to, though.

Most reputable bakeries will make an anniversary topper for you around the time of your first anniversary (for a nominal fee, of course!). If you choose to follow this tradition, it's a great alternative to eating smushed, frozen cake. If you do decide to freeze the actual cake, wrap it in saran wrap first, then aluminum foil, then put it in a box. Won't taste good, but will taste better than if you don't. As for the tradition part of it-- it's up to you. My parents have an adorable photo of them eating their top layer on their first anniversary, I think it's great. But there are SO many wedding traditions-- just pick the ones that are important to you and your future spouse!

It is tradition to have the top layer of the cake saved and frozen for the bride and groom to eat on their first anniversary. Many couples do this, but I have heard it really doesn't taste very good a year later.
You do not have to do this, but it is up to you. It's been suggested that your best bet will be to wrap the top of the cake very carefully so that it is airtight before you freeze it.
We are just going to have a small cake made to look like the top layer of our cake to eat on our anniversary.

Traditionally teh top of the cake was a fruit cake that lasted a long time. It was saved for the couples first child's christening.
You don't have to save a piece unless you like the idea of that tradition (and are having a fruit cake that will last!).
Congrats BTW!

You're supposed to eat it on your 1-year anniversary; its supposed to bring luck and prosperity (and some believe fertility) to the marriage.
Speaking from experience, do NOT bother. It will probably get smashed and it will be absolutely AWFUL tasting after spending an entire year in your freezer. Just eat your cake on your wedding day.
Good fortune comes from working at the relationship, not from eating a stale, HARD, disgusting, dried out piece of wedding cake (you'll probably forget about anyway!).
Good luck.

It is merely tradition. You are supposed to eat the cake on yor First Anniversary. I think it's a really cute idea. But if you are having a small cake and you think you may need the top layer to serve to your guests you can ask your baker to make a separate top layer for you to keep. My baker is going to make us a separate layer just because it is easier. She makes it and gives it to you like the week before so that it is not forgotten that night. But it's really up to you whether or not you want to keep it or not. I can't wait until my one year anniversary. I am going to make my husband watch our wedding video while we eat our anniversary cake. lol!

You do not have to keep the top of the cake. It is tradition to do that, on your anniversary as it gives you luck, and helps you to remember that day.
Mine is in my freezer, waiting for October to roll around! The only problem is, my husband doesn't really like cake, so he will only eat a small piece leaving the rest for me. =)

you dont HAVE to if you dont want to. traditionally you save the top layer of your cake to eat on your one year anniversary, but like i said, there really isnt much tradition in weddings left any more so if you dont want to, you dont have to. i think its a nice sentimental thing and all, and id kind of like to do it, (im getting married about a year after you) but i dont know that id want it in my freezer or whatever that long. if you didnt know about the tradition and would like to do something similar, a lot of couples are now having a small cake made in the same flavor as their top layer and eating that on their one year. but do whatever you want, its your day, and you should do what makes you happy. best of luck!

If you would like to follow tradition then save the top and eat it on your 1st wedding aniversary. There are tons of traditions and superstiotions....none of them are written in stone.

It used to be that you saved it for the first child's christening (in the UK anyway) and then it was supposed to be for your first anniversary. I tried saving mine, but it went mouldy, just like the marriage did.
