Two questions really. What qualifies something to be gourmet and what is your definition of gourmet? I was just wondering because I personally don't think that Publix brand popcorn is gourmet, as they claim, nor this run down looking chocolate shop I pass almost everday in town.

Gourmet is just another word for something tasty. Trust me, I am a cook. Most of my cooking can be 'Gourmet' if I add the word to it. But Gourmet was intended to be made for fancy foods dressed up with the pretty stuff scattered around it. I can make a sos platter and decorate it with green stuff to make it pretty, and call it Gourmet Chef's Special Delight, but it is still the same old stuff.
So, Gourmet, is just a seller. Just something they use to get you to 'Buy' the product. And you will probably pay more for it because of a simple little word.

Tip: But regular popcorn can be made Gourmet at home, add your favorite butter and seasoning, and sit relax and watch your favorite movie.

Gourmet implies quality, something uncommonly good. A person of indiscriminate taste is a Gourmet. A gourmet looks for uncommon characteristics in the food or beverages that make it different. For example, everyone can roast and grind beans. But, to come-up with a combination that will make it different with others and have uncommonly good flavor wil make it Gourmet coffee.
