Did/does your child get more ear infections due to wearing the hearing aids or it is the same as most kids? My daughter, 15 months, seems to have one every six weeks. I think I am taking care of her hearing aids correctly but I am at a loss as to why they are so often. Any experience??

My son wears hearing aides, but he doesnt seem to get infections from them, he did have ear infections as a child and they put tubes in his ears but that was way before the hearing aids.. if u think that the hearing aids are causing ur daughter to have ear infections just get some baby alcohol whipes and whipe the ear pieces with it prior to inserting them.. but also realize that at her age, even hearing children this time of year tend to get alot of ear infections.. so it could be a million and one reasons.. but give it a shot cleaning them off as often as possible, and see if it helps ..

Ear infections are typically in the middle ear space and not the external ear. If this is the case, the hearing aids are not the source of the infection. You may want to speak to your daughter's pediatrician regarding PE Tubes. If she is suffering from chronic ear infections then antibiotics might not be doing the trick.

If you are confused about the care of the hearing aids, talk to your audiologist!

If the infections are external then it could be a hearing aid problem. Sometimes changing the earmold material can resolve the issue.

Take your daughter to the pediatrician or the ENT and review all of your concerns, they will be able to give you a more definitive answer.

I don't have deaf children, but I am a sign language interpreter and I have worked a lot with deaf kids. They didn't seem to have ear infections ever that I know of.

Usually ear infections are caused by fluid being trapped in the eustachian tube. The trapped fluid breeds bacteria which causes an infection. Some kids are born with eustachian tubes that are too short, and they are more prone to getting ear infections.

It must be kind of miserable for your daughter to have ear infections and have to keep her hearing aids in. Ask your doctor if it is better for her to have the aids out while her ears are infected or if there is a special way for you to disinfect the hearing aids.

Good luck.

I'm deaf, and I too had a lot of ear infections growing up as a child, but I've hardly had them as an adult. I wore hearing aids since I was 18 months old.

One question is how long are you having her wear the hearing aids? It's not good to have them on from morning to evening. It's good to take a break from wearing them. It can be uncomfortable to wear aids too much. I like to take them off when I get home from work. And what are you cleaning the aids with?

Maybe the molds put too much pressure inside, not giving it room to breathe, so that's why it's good to take breaks from wearing it. Did you ask the doctor about this? To get ideas of what could be contributing to it?

If you have more questions, feel free to email me.
