Navy is the best because we can be anywhere in the world in 72 hours with a full fighting force, aircraft carriers and all. Here's a little video.

Ok. Here is the best summation of the difference between the US military branches I have ever heard:
It lies within the order of "Secure the Building".
When the Marines get the order, "Secure the Building", the Marines go into the building, kill everybody, put guns in the windows and doors, and nobody gets in or out. The Building is Secure.
When the Army gets the order, "Secure the Building", the Army sets up a perimeter around the building, nothing gets in or out of the building. The Building is Secure.
When the Navy gets the order, "Secure the Building", the Navy locks all the doors and windows. The Building is Secure.
When the Air Force gets the order, "Secure the Building", the Air Force signs a 12 month lease. Building Secure.
And that is the difference.

You need a more specific question as to what you mean best is. Standard of living wise, traing wise, civilan cross over wise, travel wise, equal opportunity wise, or what.
And the CG veterans are going to be flaming you for that. The coast gaurd is under the department of defense and has been for a long time. They have all the benefits of the other branches like housing, tri-care and the GI Bill. You were misinformed by someone. Yes the get less respect than the other branches but they have special jobs that no other branches can do like the salvage work of the USS Grasp and the Ice Breaking vessels and they truly are the masters of search and rescue. Not endosing them over other branches, just give them due respect as a DOD branch of the military.

First don't join the Navy because it just sucks and the quality of life is horrible and bureaucracy is mind numbing.
I'm a little biased since I spent 10 years in the Marine Corps.
For Espirit de Corps, I would join the Marine Corps. A lot of hard worked and crap but a tremendous amount of pride.
For quality of life, I would join the Air Force. Best chow, housing, training, equipment and benefits.
For better opportunities, I would join the Army. Everyone wants to join the Marine Corps and Air Force and they stay in for a long time. So positions and promotions are hard to come by sometimes in those branches. Especially, the Marine Corps since it is so small compared to the Army.

Any branch but the Marines. They all pay the same, BUT you have more opportunities for college money, getting stationed in cool places like Europe, having new cutting edge equipment, and having nice facilities in all services other than the Marines. On top of that, almost all of the jobs in the marines have equivalents in one of the other services.

Ok...
Army does a lot of deployments and takes over after the Marines have done what they need to do, they do a lot of land based operations.
Navy goes on boats and takes care of the water and air aspect.
Marines are the first in and then leave it up to the Army, they are air, sea, land and everywhere else. .
Air Force is the least strict of all the armed services, they are mostly air borne troops.
They are all joined in the same cause. So no one is better than the other, they are all joined and work together.

All the branches are here for a reason and if we did not need anyone of them why would we keep it around.
The better question would be I would like to join the military and do this ................... type of job, what branch would be best for me?

Well why don't you tell us what job it is you want to do first? They are all very important, but if you want to go infantry it won't make much sense to join the Air Force, just like it won't make much sense to join the Marine Corps if you want to be a medic.

It depends on the individual.
All of them have their lifers and all the lifers have their reason(s) for being where they are.
I was in the Navy (Naval Air Force to be more succinct), but that is not for everybody.
P.S.
If you are going to be a grunt, prepare to dig alot of holes.
