Both....cats will usually scratch with the front but if they can they will hold on with the front and kick with the back ones. It hurts!

My cats have always used both. The front paws are used to slash an opponent when face to face and also used to twist an opponent's head while biting the back of the neck in order to break the neck. Lions kill in this manner. If the cat gets turned over on it's back during a fight it will try to rip the guts out of the cat or dog on top with it's rear claws.

A cat will use his front paws to swipe; his back claws to kick and dig at the enemy's soft underbelly and his mouth to bite his enemies neck - usually goin for the jugular. Cats use ALL fours, their mouths AND their weight when fighting. I know - my male cat is a magnificent fighter (that's why I confine him in an outdoor enclosure when I put him out to enjoy the outdoors - to keep him from fighting other cats, racoons, etc).

from what i have observed from the outside feral cats and when i play with our indoor, the front paws hold and choke the prey, the back paws which are more muscular do the real damage to the enemy with repeatative hard kicks to the abdominal area or sides.

Both ... equally. They use the front paws/claws to grab and hold their prey, and they use their back paws/claws to "kangaroo kick" the crap outta their prey. Try roughing up a cat's tummy, it'll demonstrate how they use both front and back paws, BUT ... wear a leather glove!! :)

All the cats I've fought used their front paws.

Cats will usually attack first with front paws and teeth. Once they are locked together in combat, its all 4 feet and the teeth.

Both front and back paws, and you forgot, they also can bite.

Seeing two cats fight is scary IMO. That's only one reason that my Tika is strictly an INDOOR cat.

When a cat fights it uses front and back claws and of course it's teeth.

Usually both, really depends on the stance they are taking. If they are upright they usually start of by using their front set to warn of their oppressor. If they are in the middle of a scrap however, they're more likely to use their front set for grasping and their hind set for kicking in defense.
