The question is open to interpretation. Does the 13 year old actually have a weight problem, or just feel like they do? More important than losing weight is learning how to recognize the reasons you eat that aren't about hunger/nutrition. Once you can recognize the signals of real hunger vs. emotional hunger, bored hunger, what have you, you're in a much better position to take control of your experience. Exercise is of course important, however, since you haven't finished growing, the best way to get clear on a good exercise program is to talk to a doctor if you can. Health is more than just losing weight, and getting support for that process is just as important. SO, see if there are any groups in your area (Overeaters Anonymous is free) that can serve as a support during your process.

Keep junk food out of the house, nobody eats it! Don't say anything to him / her unless you want to completely destroy their self-esteem. Then get exercising as a family! Go biking, hiking, swimming, just get active~ but do it together! buy one of those hand blenders, you can get about 14 different veggies into some kind of pasta sauce and they'll never know! Kids won't even taste it! (Haha ~ I do this to my nieces and nephews. They get really full from a serving of Spongebob Macaroni and my 'special' 14 veggie marinara. They have no idea!) Also do an e-val on your family's recipies, what could you make healthier? Make it a group effort with out blaming the kid. After a while, let them help cook. Show them some of the good stuff they have been eating. They will be pleased! Good luck.

ok well i'm 13 too and my weight goes up and down all the time...but i'm always weighing in at less than 100. Let's see...right now i do track and soccer..so playing sports helps. Don't eat much junk food. eat healthy. Try a lot of differnt ways to excersize. go to your local ymca (if you have 1) and try a lot of diffent machines..but make sure you know how to use the and what part of the body they work on. if you want to work on you legs..sprint...do like 100 meters..do a few a day..within a few minutes (100 meters is like a 4th of a lap around a track). for soccer tryouts we had to do sprints and i could literally feel the fat turning into muscle..you can also jump rope. its really good for you..muscle wise..and it helps your heart
hope this helps

It depends on your height and bone structure. You might not be over weight. Just give your body time for all the changes it is making now that you are a teenager. If you want to lose a little weight just cut out bread and sweet snacks for a week or two. To take off more check with your doctor first. Please don't try to look like anyone else. Movie stars and singers, have personal trainers to help them lose weight and they go on strict diets.

Cut out all fast food such as McDonalds, Burger King, KFC and pledge only to eat at home.
Stop drinking pop. Drink water, skim milk, Iced tea with Splenda
Instead of high fat foods such a potato chips and HoHo/s put a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen table and replenish it every couple of days for a healthy snack
Walk every day for 45 minutes after school
Eat a well rounded diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken, fish and cut out the red meat.
Good luck.

reduce calorie intake. esp from fatty instant foods. the quickest and healthiest way is to eliminate pop and junk food. build a diet for the Whole family based on lean proteins and produce. dairy and carbs are important and no food group should be off limits as they are still developing. water if they are thirsty. even juice has a whopping calorie and sugar content that can undo a lot of work. exercise as simple as a walk after dinner is good for the kids and the parents.

there only 13 don't worry about it unless there Dr is and they should have your best suggestions to help. Yes we do live in a society of overweight people but to some teenagers if your not Paris Hilton skinny then your overweight and that is so far from the truth. Be healthy is all kids should worry about. I would consult there primary physician and let them direct you on the right path.

Get off the computer, stop watching tv, and go out and ride a bike or run around. Play soccer or basketball with your friends.
