Because how many people would stay in when things got bad? Everybody loves the military during peacetime. "ooh I want college money and benefits" but as soon as we go to war, everything changes...
No one would stay in during wartime if it were optional.

Many people may join, but many more would also quit. The military offers people educational training and fiancial compensation in return for a commitment of so many years of service. That system would be grossly taken advantage of if people could quit whenever they pleased. Additionally, the military is based on discipline and loyalty, and to allow people to come and go would undermine the authority of the military and its capability to perform as an efficient and dedicated unit. Signing up to serve and defend one's country is indeed a big deal, not one to be made on a whim.

For one, the government spends a lot of money in training. That would be a huge waste for someone to leave after the training before they went to their command.
Secondly, the military can be tough at times, and if a person has a bad day (as they will have many), it would be a shame for them to make a spot decision and say "I'm done".
Third, the military is about commitment. Not a revolving door for quitters.

When a person joins ANY Military, they volunteer to sign a Contract with the United States Government, under whatever branch they are joining.
Each branch of the military is under guidelines and control of our government, that is why the President is also called "Commander and Chief".
I for one am glad that individuals who have a sense of Honor and Duty are joining.
Here's some What Ifs for you -----
What if --
Someone, who was supposed to be giving your TEAM cover fire.
So that all members could get to safety, after your Humvee was hit with gunfire; suddenly decided --- I want to leave RIGHT NOW??
What if ----
That person, was supposed to be operating on one of your siblings or a friend, in the field; after he or she was hit with gunfire --- and suddenly decided --- "I want to leave right now"?
Would you SERIOUSLY be okay, with those possibilities?!?
I know that, I am NOT OKAY WITH DESERTERS OR ANYONE WHO GOES AWOL!

Can you imagine standing in front of an enemy with a regiment of troops and just when you said "Charge!" all the 'erberts said "I've had enough I'm going home to Mum"
Or flying a plane and the pilot decides he's had enough and bales out the window.
More people might join but of what use would such people be to man or beast?

That is called "AWOL". You have signed a legally binding contract and have agreed to serve your years. They are also giving you the money and experience to get a decent job for your future. The only way you can get out is if you are a total screw-up or a major medical problem that prevents you from doing your job. If they had that policy as soon as war was announced they would leave in droves. Like they say "Freedom is not "FREE" we have fought for it all this years and we continue to do so. I assume you like your freedom and would like it to continue, as do we all.

Because war is based on numbers, how much we outnumber the enemy and we need an excact amount of soldiers we have availabe, how many can be deployed in a certain amount of time, how much gear you need per unit ect. The numbers wouldn't be so reliable and easy to tract without contracts and as soon as a unit was set to go fight a fourth of a unit would disappear because they are there for the money and not because they want to serve their country.

Let me guess.... Your not real big on honesty, commitment, keeping your word, finishing things you start, telling the truth...
And people can leave when ever they want ask long as they don't mind a dis-honorable discharge and going to prison. Now go back to your silly video games.

Im in for at least 9 years. I dont know how it works in the states, but in Canada, they pay me to go to school for four years, and then I only have to serve for 4 years of minimum service. Our regular obligatory service for ncm's is no more than 2-4 years depending on your trade because they are investing a certain amount of time and effort in you. Most jobs require you to have the skills required before you even apply,, but in the military you are trained from scratch so they dont want to spend two years training you if your just going to jump ship as soon as your required to go overseas. And dont talk about all this weakening the forces crap. If you dont like the terms dont sign on the line boy. The military isn't for ******* who dont finish what they start.
ARMY FOREVER!

The Army is built on and works around organization and discipline. You cannot maintain these if people are coming and going as they please.
If Mr. Magnus is not smart enough to understand what he is signing, then they don't want him anyway.

People that would want that option, are not worth having in the Army in the first place.
