i had the same problem with my friends car when we put the radio in, what happen in our case, the wires actually came loose on one part of the harness and they would short out the system, draining the power, this sounds exactly like what is going on with your car, we couldn't tell at first so i would suggest taking out the harness and inspecting it, make sure all your wires are where they are supposed to be and that none of them are loose, good luck

Car radios have two power connections. One goes to the "always on" circuit, it draws a few micro-amps to run the clock and remember your station settings. The other is "Hot in run", which is supposed to be energized only with the iginition on. The radio draws lots of amps from that circuit, and assumes it's OK to do so because it's switched off with the ignition.

Cross those up, and the radio will be on all the time, which will drain your battery. If the radio works with the ignition off, you definitely have that problem.

do you still have a positive ground? if not, that's the problem right there.
