Unless you have your heart set on a papered pure bred, I would suggest going to your local pound or animal shelter.... there are thousands of dog and cats put to sleep every day because they don't have a home to go to....

Even if you want a pure bred, I still recommend a rescue.... There are a lot of pure bred animals that need homes.

I hate to tell you that all dogs shed (except that one Chinese Crested which only has peach fuzz not real fur), but some are worse than others..... Even my Doberman Sheds, the difference is that she is a short haired dog and unless she is laying on a white blanket you can't see it as much as you would a long haired dog....

Make sure that no matter what you do that pick a breed that is right for you.... most small dogs need LOTS of exercise or they become destructive and/or loud. Also make sure that you train your dog... Most of the people I know that have small breed dogs have no idea that there dogs are just as dangerous to babes and small children as my big dog is. Training is the key to having a "good" dog.

According to my groomer, poodles are the dog that does not shed. Every dog has issues and health related problems. personalities and you will determine if they are to be affectionate.
Pure breeds come with a variety of problems, where the small cross breeds can sport the best of both breeds, and cost substantially less. Good thing about pure breeds, is you can network, look up, and get direct answers for specific dogs.
Hit dog shows and look at the ones you gravitate towards. Its about making a match, not beauty. Find the partner you enjoy the characteristics of, inside and out.

Let's see, the miniature schnauzer doesn't shed, nor does the poodle, or the soft-coated wheaton terrier. All of those (with the exception of perhaps a toy poodle) are hearty, non-allergenic (provided there are no allergies to their saliva), super affectionate and totally devoted to their owner. The only thing I would suggest that you think about is the maintenance costs for a non-shedding dog - because they have hair, not fur, and also because they do not naturally lose their coat(s) through seasonal (spring, summer, winter and fall, lol) shedding, professional grooming can be very expensive. I have a min. schnauzer and I pay $50 every 4-6 weeks for his haircuts, nails, anal glands, ears, bathing etc. You can learn to groom yourself but it is very time consuming, and also expensive to set yourself up with the proper tools. I have groomed my dog and friends' dogs and had them come out really goofy-looking, despite my best intentions! Good luck! I am not familiar with the temperament of the Havenese.

We have 2 shih tzus and they are wonderful. If you had told me a year ago that I would be sharing my beautiful immaculate house with dogs, I would have laughed so hard!! But, we were trying to help my son adjust to the new marriage and family, and we were told shih tzus were great , so we got Bandit first, then 4 months later we got Bridgette, they dont shed, and they just want to be loved, dont get me wrong, they love to play, but out of 8 hours 6 are spent loving on their human!!! so far , we have no health issues, of course all breeds have issues when they get older, but as for size, Bandit weighs 8 full grown, and Bridgett weighs 13 full grown. Havenese are good puppes too, and Maltese. and Bichons are too, we though of all of these before , but I couldnt be happier than I am with our shih tzus, and thye do not shed!!!!!! One to think about!!!!

All dogs can have health issues.
All dogs shed (no matter what anyone tells you).

Havanese are prone to Cataracts, Orthopedic abnormalities, Luxating Patellas, and Hip dysplasia.

My favorite small breed is a boston terrier.

I see most of the people here do not know much about dogs. only dogs that don't shed are the one's that grow hair and only some are small breeds. I breed yorkies because they don't shed they are hyperallgenic, and have few health problems. actually mine have none. I would suggest going to www.akc.org for information on dog breeds. it will tell you all you need to know about each dog. they star each to dog to each question you have asked.

Chinese Crested (if you live in a mainly warm climate) The have a lil hair on them, are smaller but no dog can really be 1000000% healthy. At some point they will get ill. My dog came from a long line of champs and had a guarantee of health and we had to have an eye removed and she has horrible hip displasia....

Go to the shelter and see if there are any adult (not puppies) dogs that fit the description, then find out what they most look like. As an aside, sometimes shedding is preferable to constant grooming (like the maltese), in my opinion...

Italian greyhounds are pretty affectionate and short-haired. Not sure about health issues.
