Does anybody own a Toyota Prius? I'm curious as to if it REALLY gets as great gas mileage as they claim. I've heard a few other people say that the car isn't that great and it doesn't get as good gas mileage as claimed. I was wondering what other people had to say about it.

Do not buy a Prius for what it can do for you, buy a Prius because you want to give the shaft to the Arabs and Hugo Chavez and you want to reduce pollution. Not only because of global warming but for the respiratory health of humanity.
If everyone wants to gain something without giving something America will not kick her "oil addiction" and pollution will get worse.
To the folks who claim it does not achieve the EPA ratings for mileage, this can be said for ALL cars. So that would mean a conventional car would miss the mark by the same margin as the Prius allegedly does. It is the best alternative energy vehicle available.

My father has one, and it gets about 44mpg. In all the tests I have read, it is still easily gets the best mileage. EPA estimates are woefully inaccurate, and are to be revised for the 2008 model year. The numbers will go down 5-30% overall.
It rides well, is roomy enough, holds its value, has very high owner satisfaction and has been extremely reliable. There is some question as to how long the batteries will last, but I have heard of cabbies in NYC getting well over 250k on them.
All things being the same, I am not sure it is worth the premium you pay to get it. You could get a Corolla or Civic that gets 30mpg for about $6000 less. If you drive 15000 miles per year, and gas is $2.50 per gallon, the Prius would save you about $400 per year. So it would take you 15+ yrs to make up the difference. The Prius' higher resale value would make up for some of this, but the numbers still do not add up.

I bought a 2007 Prius in January - so far I really love it!
the mileage is not as advertised, of course. I drive mainly in the city (a little highway) and get about 42-45 MPG.
It is roomy and fun to drive, and it has all of the bells and whistles!

no car or vehicle out there get the gas mileage that the EPA ratings say, when they test the vehicles it is at 55 mph. and there is no head wind, it's a perfect enviroment. The prius is expensive compared to the same cars it's size and what they don't tell you is the battery has to be replaced in no longer than 8 yrs. at a price of $2,500, so actually what you are saving in gas is being eaten up in the extra money you have to pay for the car in the beginning and the cost to replace the battery.
