It is written, that two people held the rank of six stars. George Washington was given this rank, but not until the end of hostilities, during the Revolution. It is said that Washington never actually wore the rank on his uniform.

John Pershing, the senior army officer of WWI was the other American to be given the six star rank.

WWII had a number of five star generals and admirals. MacArthur, Eisenhower, were the first to be awarded the rank followed by admirals, Nimitz, Halsey, and Clark. Omar Bradley was awarded the five star rank in 1950, and the last to wear the rank.

Today, besides the civilian rank of 'commander in chief', the next highest rank is Chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff, presently held by General (4-star) Peter Pace, USMC.

The highest rank in the Army is the General of the Armies.

-----------

"The rank of General of the Armies has only been bestowed twice in the history of the United States Army and only once in an active duty capacity. The rank is superior to that of General of the Army (note the difference between the singular and the plural of the two ranks)."

Uhh...CinC (Commander-in-Chief) isn't an Army rank...that's the president of the United States. You don't get promoted to president.

Highest Enlisted Army Rank: E-10 Sergeant Major of the Army
Highest Officer Army Rank: 0-10 (Five-Star) General, normally Four-stars is the cap.

Technically, the highest rank would be General of the Army (five stars). The last person to have been promoted to this rank was Omar Bradley - he was promoted to General of the Army in 1950.

Aside from General of the Army, which is really a rank that you don't see, the highest rank would be General (four stars).

General....4 stars.Commander-in-Chief (CINC) is a title and not a rank. You won't find CINC on any military pay charts or promotion board recommendations. In the past there have been 5 star generals and admirals. There has never been a 6 star general, ever.
