Iams isn't good for any dog. They use by products (which are heads, feet, intestines, feathers and cancerous tissues). They also use corn - which is hard to digest and causes a lot of gas.
They also use a lot of unnatural flavors and additives.
Look for foods that are all natural - uses protein or all natural real protein meal. Look at foods such as Nutro Natural Choice (small bites www.nutroproducts.com) or Royal Canin. Foods like that.
Steer away from Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, and Pro Plan. They are all unnatural and use left over products.
Veterinarians make recommendations based on how much they are getting paid to endorse the product. Yes my friend it's ture they get a cut of how much they sell.
Do your own research.
Good Luck

I'm not going to say it's the worst of foods, but it's not the best either. It contains by-products and corn which isn't good for any dog at all. My suggestion for you is to buy pet food that isn't sold commercially. The following brands I'm going to recommend to you are brands that are sold in independent pet stores. These are....
Canidae (www.canidae.com)
Wellness (www.omhpet.com/.wellness)
Innova Evo (www.naturapet.com)
Blue Buffalo (www.bluebuff.com)
These are holistic dog foods that don't contain any corn, wheat, soy, by-products, and artifical preservatives. All those are ingredients you should avoid at all cost. These brands are a little more expensive than Iams, but it's way healthier and you'll save money from most likely taking your dog to the vet for health problems. I would suggest mixing 25% wet food for the meat they crave and 75% dry food to help clean teeth, make their breath less stinky, and to maintain firm stool that is easier to clean up. They also do number 2 less and it doesn't smell as awful. Hope this helped you out

IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet, Pedigree, Purina and other grocery store brands are not good foods. They contain to many cheap fillers. Dogs are meat eaters not grain eaters. They are designed to process nutrition from meat proteins not grains.
It takes up to 3 times more of a grain based food for a dog to receive proper nutrition then it does of a good quality meat based food.
Corn, Wheat & soy are common allergens. They also are high carbohydrates.Soy causes excess gas. Corn & soy have been implicated in recent studies as a cause of unexplained seizures in dogs. Corn, wheat & soy are not easily digested by dogs.
Some good food choices:
Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Innova, Solid Gold, Timberwolf, Blue Buffalo just to name a few.
***vets do NOT get a cut of products they sell. They have to buy the foods they sell at wholesale prices just like any other pet business and they then sell at retail just the same as any pet business. That is the only "cut" they get from sales********

Iams actually isn't a good food for any dog. It contains inferior ingredients, and harmful chemicals, as well as being full of fillers.
You'll find by switching to a high quality food your dog will actually eat less, because the dog gets much more out of what it does eat.
Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, Innova Evo and Cannidae.
There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:
A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.
A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.
A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.
A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.
There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

This really depends on the constitution of your dog. We moved away from Iams (and it's sister product Eukanuba) because our dogs bowels did not react to it well.
Is it nutionionally blanced - yes.
Will your dog eat the small breed formual - yes.
Is it the best food you can feed your dog - no.
Might I recommend the food below:

no, it's crap. It filled with corn, fillers which can cause a lot of allergies and peservatives. It's bad for digestion and lacks actual nutrition. Try a holistic/organic food. good examples are canidae, orijen, nurto, innova, and holistic select. When you find a store and ask for free samples. don't forget to intoduce new food very slow.

They say it is, but do ur homework and u will find out different. We have fed our lab Ol' Roy since he was a puppy and he seems to do fine with it. My father drives a semi for a living and he will tell u that all u are paying for is the name. He delivers the bone meal, pork bone meal, etc that are in ALL dog foods. It is a personal preference as to what U want to feed UR dog. I have a 7 year old lab also who has been on ol roy since she was a pup and she has done fine, and we just purchased a german shepherd who also is doing fine with the store brand dog food. As i stated earlier, it is up to u what u want to feed ur pet.
