Does anyone know if, in Pennsylvania, if my employer has to pay me for my time off to serve for Jury Duty? I've heard that I either have to use my own vacation time OR take the time unpaid from my job? How can this be fair or legal? It's not like I asked to be called for jury duty? HELP!

It depends on your employer. Some will give you the day off if you give them the money from jury duty. Some will just excuse the day off.

Most bosses are reasonable I would think. Mine was when I was called for jury duty.

If your boss is this unreasonable, it may be time to consider changing jobs.

The employer has nothing to do with jury duty. Thus, it cannot be forced to pay you for not working on the said day. The court must pay your duty but the amount is very minimal.

I could be wrong, but as a former Pittsburgher, when called for jury duty we were excused and paid for the absences by turning in our court issued duty checks to employer. Employer paid us our regular salary as if we had reported for work on that day or days of court ordered absence. Could very well be a federal if not city/state law.

Paying you during jury duty is not a state law or issue... it is based on the employer's policies.

The courts will pay you 30 dollars a day or more.
Employer does not have to pay you a dime.
