Good Luck---I wouldn't send any animal in cargo, myself, I don't trust those people.
BUT---if you are going to do it, get a VERY sturdy steel cage for the cat to travel in, the toughest available. If you send the animal in a 2-piece plastic cage, it can get crushed, fall apart, the cat can escape, get killed, who knows? The trip through the baggage delivery system is rough, and the cage must be super-strong.
Do not use a cage which is in 2 halves!!! (upper and lower).

Be sure to find out from the airline about the type of container that is best for your cat - but I've dealt with many cat breeders that ship cats all over the U.S., and they do just fine.

We have two cats that have flown over oceans in cargo, the elder one has done it three times, the younger only once. Either way, they were both fine come the end of it. From Turkey to Arizona, then to Hawaii after a couple years, then finally to Florida. I so very dislike the military.

I would definitely talk to your vet and maybe call a couple of airlines to see how they handle this situation. Also try Purina.com and see if they have any suggestions.

only a few airlines will ship animals but they are safe. I have shipped mine from NC to LA and had no problems.

look at companion air! they cater to pets and the people they own. they also do animal shipping without a human companion. they are all aobut you and your pets and i could highly recomend them. i have shipped birds with them before.
